This book has so much to offer. There is a well thought out, detailed setting with superb worlds building. There's a beautiful romance that is at once heartbreaking and hopeful. The characters act in ways that feel true the characters, even though their decisions can be at times frustrating.

This book made me feel.

You absolutely need to read the prefix and definitions on this book, BEFORE you try to jump in. I took the advice of my friend who had got about half way through and realized she had messed up by not doing so.... So I did and I can say without question that this book was beautiful. I adored the character development and the scenes where painted so vividly that I felt like I could reach out and touch them. Certain scenes I felt like I was right there with the main character living the issue or the battle. I don't want to give anything away, but I promise this book has it all... War, distraction, selfishness and a little romance. This was the perfect amount of pages and timing... The ending wasn't as much as a cliff hanger as some of my recent reads, but, it did end in a way that will have you coming back for more, the story is definitely not over yet.  .. I can't wait to read book 2..

Thoughts
The world building and concept is great. Interesting idea, new takes on fantasy concepts. However I really struggled with the writing style. First person isn't my favourite to begin with but this one felt like every sentence was just off the mark.

Awkward phrasing such as 'I step down' instead of 'I stepped down' or 'I look' instead of 'I looked' made sentences feel abrupt and disjointed, and there was a general absence of descriptive wording to give a good sense of characters and motivations. Very frustrating as I could tell the general world conception was well thought out. We are introduced to a character early on and it felt like there was so much information missing on this apparently important person and then again in following events where it took me a bit to even understand what was going on exactly. Lots of "Missing missing information" as they say.

Character wise, again the clunky writing made it harder to really get a good depth to the characters (when not in first person view) and switching between first person view made it harder to get into the characters voice. A couple of weird consistencies like how royalty talks the same as the main character (especially in regards to Ma and Pah), and the royalty in general acting more like a regular guard then those who run a kingdom.

I struggled to maintain the motivation to read this book due to the writing but felt like towards the end it was showing enough improvement that the next one may still be worth trying, as is the world concept. The main plot point was interesting as it was both obvious and also not (in how it actually occurred). When the author slips into third person POV the writing improved dramatically.

At this time I wouldn't recommend this book but if I find the second book fixes the above flaws it may well be worth struggling through the first in order to enjoy a world and storyline with much potential and a great new concept.

Yes, this is an excellent fantasy book. For me it was really long and I think a lot of it could’ve been cut out but also maybe a lot of it is for the remaining books in the series. I know they had to do a lot of worldbuilding, but it was definitely too much for me. I just really wanted the love story and there wasn’t that much of the love story in this. It’s definitely a story about a heroine and her battle to find out who she is. I would’ve loved for less characters because I kept getting confused but I still absolutely enjoyed it and went through it relatively quickly. So I think if you enjoy fantasy at all, I think you would definitely like this book.
