"A cat has nine lives. For three he plays, for three he strays and for the last three he stays." - Old English Proverb
Grimalkin is a cat from the Victorian era who died in 1902. But as we all know, cats have nine lives, and Grimalkin was lucky enough to have only used one. Thanks to the Cat-Sìth, a creature from Celtic folklore, he's given the chance to live out his remaining eight as a ghost cat.
Grimalkin haunts the house he once lived in, observing the people who inhabit it over the decades. He's a grumpy, old-fashioned cat (he'll definitely let you know what he thinks), and I learnt some vintage words from him, like nincompoops, which I'm definitely adding to my vocabulary.
But Grimalkin also has a soft side. I was really touched by moments like when he comforts Eilidh, the woman who saved him as a kitten, as she's dying, or when he retrieves the ring the Rockefeller girl lost in the 1930s to help the poor and bullied girl from the 1990s.
I didn't know what to expect when I picked this up, but as a cat mom, the title and cover immediately caught my eye. And I love the name Grimalkin for a cat. This book made me cry and laugh (especially when Grimalkin let his displeasure be known for Friends).
The epilogue was a little weird; I still don't understand it, but that didn't take away from the overall charm and emotion of the story.
If you love cats, ghosts or time-spanning tales with heart, I definitely recommend it.

Seeing how lives the changed over the decades
Seeing how lives the changed over the decades
I really liked the concept of this story, but was ultimately wanting more from it. I feel like I would have connected with it more if we had more than just one day with Grimalkin to get to know the new families and time periods. While the times he reemerged were cute (some name dropping, some historical events), I don’t think we got as much of the human interaction or stakes, but I’m not sure if that was the intent for this otherwise cozy read.
