***Possible Spoiler ****
This was described as a gothic horror. After looking up what that meant, I would say it's a fair assessment. This story is about Vern, a runaway from a cult, and how she tries to make it on her own. In the woods. With 2 newborns. While dealing with weird changes in her body. Oh, and ghosts to boot! I mostly enjoyed the story but I did have a hard time with everyone seeming to be ok with a chitonous chick running around. The weirdest part of the story, and unnecessary in my opinion, was the strange graphic ghost 4-way sex scene in the hotel. I'm not sure it added anything to the story.
The reader for the audio book was good. She had a nice tone and soothing voice.

This was incredibly fascinating but I think a lot of it also went over my head. I loved the characters and their relationships with one another, though, and I loved how Solomon wrote about Vern's albinism and GoGo's gender expression. I'd be interested in reading more of their work!

Drawn in by my love for sci-fi, I found myself captivated not just by the futuristic elements of this book, but by the powerful theme of retribution at its core. The story masterfully explores the idea that hindsight is 20/20, with every choice and consequence laid bare as the plot unfolds. As the characters face the repercussions of their past actions, the narrative builds with relentless tension, keeping readers on edge. This is more than just a sci-fi adventure—it’s a gripping exploration of accountability, redemption, and the inescapable echoes of the past.

Would've been the biggest 5 star if it wasn't for smut in one chapter (don't think it was needed the way it was written). But it's a beautiful book!

This was a weird one. Totally dug it, though. Well told and original storytelling. Kinda Mexican Gothic-meets-Judas and the Black Messiah-meets-Venom-meets-The Vanishing Half-meets-Their Eyes Were Watching God. Sorta. Loved the queer and Lakota rep (pleasantly surprised with the accuracy there). Stick it out - you won’t regret it!
