I really really enjoyed the first two parts of this book. it was dreamlike and introspective and the character building and view was really intimate. and then all of the action of the last part happened and it felt like it had sped up by a million, and all of these random side characters were being introduced with strange behaviours (the motel women, the boy driving the car), and especially the very end felt quite rushed and didn't hold up the very solid and much slower pacing of the beginning of the book. I still very much enjoyed it, and I give the beginning 5 stars and the end 3 so an average of 4.

This book felt a little heavy handed and the plot had some holes. I preferred the other Rivers Solomon books that I've read so far (Model Home and An Unkindness of Ghosts).

I didn’t know how much I was gonna love this book. I was a bit confused in the beginning but holy hell the story is impactful in so many ways and truly angering and heartbreaking. I’m so intrigued by these characters and wish there were more
This was a wild ride! And fascinating if you are looking for a social commentary/queer/southern Gothic horror. It will haunt me for some time

This book is heavy with themes of intergenerational trauma, colonialism, sexuality, self-acceptance. Appreciate how the author encourages readers to find whatever it is that you need in this moment. Someone who is a parent will likely experience a stronger impact from the story.
Vern is a pregnant child that is running away from a commune of sorts. Yet no matter how far she gets, something or someone finds her. With her twin boys, Howl and Ferrell, she tries to make a way in the forest around them while something awakens inside her.
And somehow, the further she gets away, it’s like she carries her memories of the commune with her-like ghosts.
This book was a good read. It was a bit strange and fast. In the end, it was a little heavy handed on the sex and what can be construed as anger, but it was good, nonetheless.
