**spoiler alert** I really enjoyed this book, the plot was all over the place but kinda in a fun way. I could never predict the direction it would go in next. While I enjoyed the twists, they felt almost too random. I was slightly dissatisfied with the last 15% of the book, everything went too fast and too slow at the same time. The cult turning out to be a government experiment felt like a weak justification for everything. Also, resurrecting everyone felt like a bit of a cop out, and out of character for Vern. That being said the ending was quite beautiful. The book was so beautifully written and gripping that it makes my issues with the pacing and plot easier to push aside. I’m still giving this book 4 stars, despite my complaints, because it was a very good read and I would recommend it!!

a mess but decent.

This book started very promising. Almost thrilling in its possibility. I had read the reviews, nearly all of which had incredible things to say, and I was eager to read something that seemed so powerful. And I will say, the first half of the book delivered. Solomon’s writing on motherhood is some of the most moving and beautifully accurate I have ever read, and this is a feat, because there is a lot of writing about motherhood, and much of it falls maddeningly short. But half way through, the book turn an interesting direction, and I am still not quite sure what to make of the ending. But the first half was enough to grant four stars, for sure.

This one just didn't do it for me. The story was neat, but I was perpetually confused by the way most of the characters spoke and acted (unrealistically inconsistent), and I felt like there were a lot of logic or continuity gaps that pulled me out of the story. I don't mean the magical realism (or horror?) elements, but speech acts and behaviors that one would expect to be 'normal.'
