I honestly did not expect the murderer to be who it ended up being. That was a pleasant surprise, since I felt so sure of who it was. That really changed my experience of the book. I really liked how the author linked the social changes to the crime at the centre of the novel. It was really interesting exploring Japanese culture and all the fragmentations that existed after WW2. I also liked how police investigations were illustrated. A lot of my enjoyment of the book came from observing the painstaking process of homicide investigation. Overall, i really enjoyed the humanness of the story - the murderer wasn’t an abhorrent evil person, he was just a regular person who was desperate to preserve the future he’d created for himself.

Really good police procedural that feels very authentic for the most part (one unrealistic coincidence on a train marring the rest of the well-plotted following of leads.) Also an interesting time capsule looking at Japan as it modernises.
