(re-read) i hate mr rochester. st john is an irrelevant flop incel and i also hate him. i love jane (complicated). helen burns deserved better.

What an amazing book. I can already anticipate the reasons people don't like this book--Jane is a snob, Mr Rochester is an insane abusive asshole, etc.

I love that Jane is a snob! Do you realize the force of character necessary for an orphaned young woman with no money, no resources, nothing to her name in 1847 had to have in order to be a damn snob? To be so strong in her conviction, her faith, and her WORTH as a human being? I would be Jane's best friend in a damn heartbeat. Even if she has terrible taste in men.

I listened to the Audible edition with Thandie Newton (who was WONDERFUL) as narrator. It was perfect for how atmospheric and Gothic much of this novel was. I loved it and I wish I had read this earlier. Definitely going on my favorites shelf

Love Jane's introspection throughout. The quest of finding oneself, companionship, and family. Would have loved her to meet a better man to share a life with, but taking into account the time this was written, I guess this was acceptable.

Mainly, I enjoyed the book due to Jane's resilience.
