I had to read this for a class assignment (middle grades education major) and I expected it to be a knock-off type Twilight story. I was pleasantly surprised. This story, while still tapping into the supernatural trend, was very unique. Every chapter ended with me wanting to read the next and the ending of the whole book made me mad because I wanted to immediately start reading the second book in the series and I don't have it yet haha! It was a super easy read, but it discussed real and serious issues that were easy to relate to. I highly recommend if you're looking for something to get your imagination going.

Summary: (Taken from the Goodreads Website)
One night Kylie Galen finds herself at the wrong party, with the wrong people, and it changes her life forever. Her mother ships her off to Shadow Falls—a camp for troubled teens, and within hours of arriving, it becomes painfully clear that her fellow campers aren’t just “troubled.” Here at Shadow Falls, vampires, werewolves, shapeshifters, witches and fairies train side by side—learning to harness their powers, control their magic and live in the normal world.
Kylie’s never felt normal, but surely she doesn’t belong here with a bunch of paranormal freaks either. Or does she? They insist Kylie is one of them, and that she was brought here for a reason. As if life wasn’t complicated enough, enter Derek and Lucas. Derek’s a half-fae who’s determined to be her boyfriend, and Lucas is a smokin’ hot werewolf with whom Kylie shares a secret past. Both Derek and Lucas couldn’t be more different, but they both have a powerful hold on her heart.
Even though Kylie feels deeply uncertain about everything, one thing is becoming painfully clear—Shadow Falls is exactly where she belongs…
Reaction:
Ahhh, finals are over and there is more time to read, can life get any better? This is the epitome of a perfect, light, summer read. Heck, this book is set at a summer camp for supernaturals! I finished this book in a day and I loved every minute of it! It was funny, mysterious, romantic, and fantastical! I've been wanting to read this series for a long time and finally Cait gave me the second book, so I thought it was about time to start reading this series. I went out and got the first book and now here we are. I seriously loved this book...okay, enough ranting and onto the characters.
Characters:
Kylie Galen:
I've read multiple reviews where it has been said that Kylie is a whiner and that nothing gets done in the book, but I beg to differ. Kylie is going through difficult times and she reacts about the same as every other teen would: she becomes cold, angry, and distant. She blames people and gets angry. I don't blame her! Kylie is also strong mentally and even though she isn't exactly "accepting" of new ideas she has enough of an open mind to entertain supernatural possibilities. But, the thing that I liked best about Kylie was the fact that she was a very good friend to pretty much everybody and she is very forgiving.
Derek and Lucas:
They were both awesome! Can Kylie end up with both of them? Is that even possible? Derek is very kind and respects Kylie's wishes about staying just friends, which is really rare in male leads which makes me like Derek even more! Lucas is very mysterious and shares a past with Kylie, he is sort-of brooding and more of a bad boy type, but he is actually very kind and is never mean to Kylie! I also thought Lucas was awesome! Urg! Why do they both have to be so kind and perfect! Sheesh, C.C. Hunter please don't make me choose!
Miranda and Della:
Can anyone ask for better friends? I absolutely loved Miranda and Della! They were the best friends that Kylie could ever ask for and they even set aside their differences to keep Kylie happy and even ended up friends in the end. I hope in future books that there are no big tiffs in this friendship, because that would make me very sad :(
Holiday:
Holiday runs the Shadow Falls Camp, and even though Kylie doesn't trust her right away they end up becoming very close friends. Holiday is only a bit older then Kylie and they have a lot in common. Like most other characters in this story, Holiday is very kind and tries her best to help Kylie find out who she is and help her feel at home! Please, please, please let nothing happen to Holiday, she is my favorite character!
Overall:
I love, love, loved this book! I can't imagine a cuter, funnier book to read at the beginning of the summer! Some people say that there is a big cliffhanger at the end of this book, but I didn't think that, that was the case. Personally, I thought the book wrapped up rather nicely and I'm very excited to get into the next book in the series! I recommend this book to anyone who likes paranormal, romantic, or funny reads.

I really enjoyed this book and cannot wait for the second book. I want to know what Lucas had to say in his letter.
2...I finished this one BUT there wasn't ANYTHING happening...this is no different then any other teenie bopper novel out there...Finding out they have a supernatural ability, a love triangle and parent betrayal...Seriously NO suspense, and even the ending wasn't so...
This review appears on my blog, Starting the Next Chapter.
Kylie is in a tough situation. Stuck in the middle of warring parents and caught in the wrong place at the wrong time, she is sent away for the summer to what she is told is a camp for troubled teens. What she finds, however, is that these teens aren't troubled in the typical sense of the word... and neither is Kylie. Born at Midnight is the story of one girl's discovery of who (and what) she really is, all set in the lush world of Shadow Falls. Prepare yourself for an adventure.
What can I say about Kylie? She's a strong-willed character dealing with several problems that any girl would be stressed out by. She's sassy, bright and, most of all, STUBBORN. Her state of denial is a bit hard to deal with, at times, but her point of view is at least understandable. Watching her learn about and interact with her new world made for a very interesting story and I enjoyed her interactions with her peers very much from a reader's stand-point. Over all, she was a fun heroine to get to know and I can already tell that she's in for a lot of growth as the series progresses.
I had so much fun with the plot of Born at Midnight. Not only does it include so many of my favorite fantasy characters, it has scads of romance and mystery, as well. There is witty banter galore, which is always appreciated, and the interaction between characters was riveting. The story's progression was at times bogged down by Kylie's excessive stubbornness, but when all is said and done, I had so much fun reading this book. I loved the story and couldn't wait to move on to the next book in the series.
I have had Born at Midnight sitting on my shelf for quite some time now and, thanks to much encouragement from a dear friend, I finally worked it into my reading pile. I have no qualms whatsoever against saying she was absolutely right. Born at Midnight is a vastly entertaining story with some of my favorite figures from the fantasy genre. In addition to that, there is a measure of mystery that piques your curiosity from the start. This is an exceedingly fun book that just begs to become your latest summer read.

First -- this book is CLEARLY intended for the pre-teen middle school crowd. If you're 19 and reading this book and ticked off because it's too juvenile...it is. It's a true YOUNG Adult novel.
That said, CC Hunter owes a huge thank you hug to Rick Riordan and Stephanie Meyer. From page one this book screams "I AM BORN FROM PERCY JACKSON AND BELLA!!!" Everything from the "signals" that appear over/in each character's head (hello Percy) to the lovesick loner who doesn't fit in (hello Bella) to the "paranormal summer camp" (hello AGAIN Percy) is a mish-mosh of those two books. So if you liked those books -- it goes to figure you'll like these too.
Book One -- Born at Midnight -- starts out as...well...as a beginning. Kylie doesn't really fit in at her school any more, her best friend has slipped away from her little by little and her boyfriend broke up with her. When she gets caught at a party with alcohol and drugs (which she never partakes in, of course) she gets shipped off to a camp for "troubled teens" suggested by her psychiatrist. Turns out "troubled" means "supernatural." Kylie's supernatural gift (at least in this book) is seeing ghosts, and the rest of the book is mainly introductions: introductions to her new best friends (Miranda and Della), her new parent role models (Holiday and Burnett) and her new love interests (Derek and Lucas). There's a bit of learning how to deal with her ghost whispering and trying to figure out where she fits in - but for the most part this is a very long, but surprisingly enjoyable introduction to a series.
Parents -- This one is pretty safe. There's a fairly heavy handed (if you're not 13) "anti-sex outside of a committed relationship, but really outside of marriage" lesson embedded (complete with a pregnancy scare for the not so good ex-best friend), no drugs, and no real violence. It's not scary (despite being filled with witches, werewolves, fae and ghost whisperers!) There are a few semi-steamy kisses, but always with the "make decisions when you're not all hot and bothered" message attached to them. As a book for a 12 year old, this one hits the sweet spot. It feels like she's reading something "grown up" but is safe enough that I can enjoy her reading it.
All in all, I give this 4 stars for what it is -- a YOUNG adult novel. The characters are fairly flat, very stereotypical, but there are moments of actually good dialogue and fun. The plot line is (like I said earlier)stolen borrowed heavily based on previous best selling young adult books, and while it doesn't reach the originality level of Riordan or even Meyer, it is a fun, quick read.
