I was sososo excited to read this when I got it in the mail(: The premise sounded great and the cover is phenomonal... thanks, Goodreads!
Anyways -- I was definetely not let down by Born at Midnight. It may not be the most original plotline but personally I really enjoyed it. The side characters were particularly awesome. Who doesn't love snarky vampires and witches?
There was one thing that really annoyed me, though -- how the main character was in denial like, the entire book. I get how it'd be hard to accept that you're a supernatural, but even after seeing so much proof she's still like "I'm not one of you guys, it's a mistake". It REALLY made me angry how she was like "I'm not sure which is worse, having a brain tumor or being a supernatural". Ugh. And even after she made friends and began to enjoy herself she STILL wanted to go home.
Aside from that, this book was fantastic. I recommend it to people who love the paranormal, and books such as House of Night.

Better than I thought it would be... I read it in one day! I'll request the next book from the library!
I hate leaving a series unfinished so I figured I should start from the beginning again.
I really enjoyed this book and I couldn't put it down and just finished it as fast as I could. And rushed into picking up the second book to find out what happens next.
I love the characters that were introduced, the premise of the plot, and the main character. There is a certain amount of mystery that it keeps you reading to find out what happens next. I like Kylie and reading from her POV as she's trying to figure out who she is.

Good idea. Cute love triangle and intriguing mystery. Or truthfully, multiple mysteries. One of which we only get a partial answer to because, of course, this is a series. One of my biggest beefs was with Kylie though. Loved the supporting characters but not a fan of her. Not how a leading role should be if she's to carry the series. She's whiny and self centered in the beginning. I tried to convince myself it was because she was sixteen and an only child, dealing with her parents' divorce and seeing ghosts, but it was just too much after a while. Luckily she seemed to mature somewhat by the end of the story but I'm still not 100% behind her like I normally am with my heroines. Since I'm curious which hottie she will choose, I'll read the next one and pray Kylie continues to take a more confident stance in her life instead of avoidance and pouting. If not, I'll probably ditch the third book. I also felt the story with her ghost was a bit obvious (though the information was necessary) and the animal sanctuary crime was too easily wrapped up. There was no real investigation or thought process that the reader could follow. Kylie had an idea using Derek and her friends jumped right in to help. It was almost like the author said, "Well, this is long enough, so here's the ending." I would've liked more clues. Equal focus and energy spent on that problem as what the author put forth in figuring out who/what Kylie might be. Sadly, for me, a great premise doesn't offset what feels like half ass work.
Une relecture pour moi, 4 ans plus tard. J'avoue que certaines choses m'ont effectivement dérangé mais je sais que la suite s'améliore et j'ai qu'une seule envie : celle de poursuivre et de lire les tomes suivants !
I think this book is literally just all of my favorite tropes combined. The chosen one, love triangle, supernatural boarding school, close group of friends, to name a few. Peak early 2010s paranormal romance.
When Kylie Galen is sent to a camp for "troubled teens", she finds out about the existence of the supernatural world and questions everything she knew about herself and her family. On one hand, the author created an interesting world and intriguing potential love triangle, and the book definitely improved as it went on. However, there were also pages and pages of the heroine being judgmental and insisting that she wasn't supernatural, which kept the plot from moving forward.
