I can appreciate there was some good writing but this book was just not for me at all. It was just too philosophical. I don’t mind unlikeable characters or character driven stories, in fact I prefer character driven stories. But what I do need is to care about what happens to the characters in a story, and unfortunately I just don’t care about any of these characters. The only bit that stick with me was the Beethoven quote that was used throughout;  “Muss es sein? (Must it be?)” and “Es muss sein! (It must be!)”

Drama and romance are not really my thing, but this book blew me away with its unique storytelling and deep dives into the psyche.

"Einmal ist keinmal, says Tomas to himself. What happens but once, says the German adage, might as well not have happened at all. If we have only one life to live, we might as not have lived at all."

I have nothing to say that hasn't been said before .. but I'll say it anyway.

Kundera is a sneaky little bastard. He tries to distract you with all of the glaring philosophical questions about the weight of human existence and debates of the morals of committing adultery without societal consequences. All the while, he feeds us lies to fit his motives. I think I need to read this about five more times to really understand it and see through the webs he weaves.

(two quotes because I can’t make up my mind)

"He remained annoyed with himself until he realized that not knowing what he wanted was actually quite natural. We can never know what to want because living only one life we can either compare it to our previous lives nor perfect in our lives to come. Was it better to be with Tereza or to remain alone?"

Lots of quotes I loved, but I feel like I missed a few things. Definitely worth a reread sometime. Interesting format too! Reflective, scattered, and a little elusive.
