A Preston/Child novel featuring Pendergast but...get this...NOT in nyc. This one actually made me sleep with the light on a couple nights. Serial killer in the cornfields, abandoned mines, introduction to cory. Its all in here and its all good.
Incidentally I also decided to start playing a little game with myself with this book...from this one all, for all Preston/Child novels I try my damndest to figure out the mystery before pendergast. He also has that one final twist over me, but sometimes i figure out the big question mark.
A sidenote: I figured this one out. :)

I'm not really sure what brings me back to this series, other than my deep love for [b:Relic|67035|Relic (Pendergast, #1)|Douglas Preston|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1389576748s/67035.jpg|23046]. This one is serviceable, reading like an overlong X Files monster of the week episode. And it is long, especially in the finale which drags and drags as it dispatches a whole bunch of people we've only just met and have no affinity for.
I'm still not quite sure why everyone thinks Pendergast is so weird. It mostly seems to be the way he looks because otherwise it's just that he doesn't like junk food and plays his cards close to his chest (maybe a little too close; I prefer thrillers where there is the potential to try and figure out the culprit). The rural setting stands out though felt somewhat stereotypical (the musical choices of the teenage 'goth' were cringe worthy).
So, a fun enough mystery with a helping of gore to kill some time, just don't expect to be amazed.

Awesome! Very intense book. I couldn't put it down. The chapters at the end were nerve-racking and kept me on the edge of my seat.
I have no words for how amazing this book was. Not only does it make chills run down your spine but it keeps you enthralled and turning page after page. Not to mention nothing is as it seems, nor is the ending guessable. I highly recommend this book to all psychological horror, crime, and murder mystery lovers. This truly was a fun read
There were scenes in this book that gave me the heebie jeebies. These books are just so well written I get lost in them!!
Listened to on audiobook. 3.5 stars. I love Pendergast books but this one fell a little short for me... I loved the suspense and the secondary characters like "Miss Swanson" :) but MAN this book was full of 'scary movie' tropes. Creepy corn fields, need I say more?
I found this novel to be much more predictable than the other books I have read in this series, and this may be because I listened to it on audiobook and heard the inflection of the killer's yells. You'll know what I mean if you read it this way!
Overall it wasn't my favorite but was still entertaining. As a general FYI, this is pretty darn gruesome, guys!
