Not the best pendergast book but it had some plot points that carry on the storyline if you follow the series

My takeaway from listening to this, or any of this series, just move or go out of town if Agent Pendergast shows up in your neck of the woods. Things are fixin' to get creepy-crawly fast.
It's been a while since I've read or listened to this series. The earlier ones are best, CABINET OF THE CURIOSITIES is my favorite. STILL LIFE WITH CROWS is next favorite.
Excellently told. If I could have, but couldn't since I listened to this as a commute book, I'd have had my feet up off the floor to keep whatever is under the seat from grabbing.
It's scary, angering, sad, thrilling. I keep waiting for Agent Pendergast to just implode one day. I know he must internalize everything. He has his ways of dealing with each case, but dadgum!
This book takes place in Kansas. I am not sure where the narrator got his "Kansas" accent, but I am fairly certain we don't sound like that. Though he did say 'creek' correctly. It's pronounced 'crick'.....
Can definitely recommend.

I really wanted to like this book, but it was a pretty terrible read. Far-fetched, flat characters, and maybe the world’s longest [very not awesome] ending. Would have been dramatically better if an editor had said “hey, maybe there doesn’t need to be 200+ pages of pointless nothing?” Also, the main character’s deduction skills are obviously top-notch, but come across as 100% non-believable and incongruous to every relationship and setting throughout the story.

The first foray out of New York City in the main narrative line of the series (excepting Thunderhead, obviously, as a tributary) is in many ways the most pedestrian entry so far, but it's so well written it didn't really bother me. The final quarter of the book is an extended climax that in true Pendergast fashion sees the police in a world of hurt. We are introduced to a teenaged goth protege (which I found funny as the Dresden series also did this - are there a lot of midwestern teenaged goths in need of mentors?) and a tale of horror and violence that as always, intrigues and thrills.

Until I started on this series, I wasn't aware how perfect these stories are for me. It's just fantastic enough to be full of mystery and wonder and just believable enough to avoid falling into fantasy territory. I love fantasy, don't get me wrong, but for a story like this, the 'monsters' these authors gravitate to are perfect.

What are these books? What is this book, a techno-horror-thriller? I'm not sure how to classify this since it's not urban fantasy, but the closest relative I can think of would be some of Michael Crichton's stuff, but with a satisfying continuity of character and sequence of events that I really love. Pendergast remains a cipher, more or less, but one that is slowly realizing depth almost in spite of himself.

I am really looking forward to the next book.

A little repetitious in some ways (having to hear Pendergast and his oddness described by a half dozen narrating characters gets tiring) but a good thriller with interesting characters and an intriguing mystery. Engaging writing, not dumbed down. Been a while since I read a Preston & Child - I remember now why I used to love them.
