DNF...I actually liked this, it was just too damn long. I read about a 3rd and just didn't have time to finish before my book club meeting, so I spoiled the ending for myself. If this had been 200 pages shorted I think I would have been really engaged, but there were so many perspectives on the same events that it became a little redundant.
FBI agent Pendergast investigates a series of murders in a small Kansas town, where the killer leaves behind strange clues and symbols. He uncovers a dark secret involving an ancient curse, a failed experiment, and a hidden treasure.
This book is an amazing story with a completely different level and unique twist from the first three books in the series. The identity of the killer is revealed at the end, and it will blow your mind with its shocking and unexpected connection to the plot.
The story also incorporates some ancient native Indian history and mythology, which adds to the mystery and intrigue of the setting. The characters are well-developed and memorable, especially Pendergast, Corrie, and Kelly.
The book is not only a suspenseful thriller, but also a horror novel that will scare you with its gruesome and terrifying scenes.
I enjoyed reading this book and I am looking forward to the next one in the series.

Still holds its own, 20 years later. I had forgotten the beginnings for Corrie, adding enjoyment to her later stories. Classic Pendergast; you'd never think this was an early entry in the series.
Another of the side stories that just involves Pendergast. Not one of their best, but adds some interesting details to the Pendergast backstory.

One of my favorite Pendergast books so far, Still Life finds our antihero on vacation in Kansas as he investigates (what else?) a string of bizarre murders. The genius of this book is not in the procedural details, but in the prose that paints the strange figure in the dark suit into a Wyeth painting. Seeing the strange wonder of the FBI interact with the regular folks of the FBI gives this book the dark, twisted sense of humor that makes the darker points a little brighter, and the lighter moments enough to make you laugh out loud.
Decent addition to the Preston/Child oeuvre. This entry again stars Agent Pendergast. He is in Kansas where there is a sadistic serial killer on the loose.
