After three novels taking place mostly in New York, it was a nice change of pace to see a different setting! I really loved the small-town feel of Still Life with Crows, especially with transplanting a guy like Pendergast right into it. Corrie was also a real sympathetic character - she was rebellious and sort of bratty, but she's also a kid and seeing the quasi-paternal interactions between her and Pendergast were nice to see (and enough to make me 'yikes' out of my chair when Connie's mother accused Pendergast of having lecherous intentions).
The mystery itself was also really engrossing with plenty of colorful characters. The only thing that made me really roll my eyes was the 'Mind Palace' technique - I know it's a Pendergast novel, but it just felt silly without being fun at all. That might also be a consequence of having to sit through it with BBC Sherlock, but the Mind Palace just felt like a slog to read through every time.

As per usual the book starts out slow and then the last 100 pages or so are packed with excitement and action. We learn a bit more about Pendergast in this one, but not much. The ending had a bit of a Lake Placid twist that I appreciated..I also enjoy the almost supernatural but also backed with science. That it could happen storylines
Graphic: Violence, Kidnapping, Murder
Moderate: Animal death
It was hard to pick how many starts I wanted to give this book. I liked it a little bit less than the previous three books of the Pendergast series, which I gave 4 stars, but I liked it better than the three star "liked it" classification.
Unlike book one, two and three in the series this one doesn't read as fast. It might have something to do with the fact that POV is often switched to characters that aren't that important for the story, e.g. the sherrif.
I'm also starting to get a bit annoyed that in every book until now the police, especially higher ranking officers, are dumb and refuse to help Pendergast. I like Corry Swanson and I hope she returns in the series.
I liked the story; it isn't too predictable. I would have liked to read a bit more about the Native Americans though.
