Active Learning (testing) is key - recall strengthens memories
Spaced repetition - the harder it is to recall, the more you will remember
Interspersion - changing activity will
Reflection
Generation

A really good introduction to retrieval with excellent data and evidence. Very user friendly look at how to improve practice.

Learning is not what most people think

And that is how the book prepares its audience, the central theme is learning the right way ("right way" meaning supported by empirical studies).

Some of the advice may be taken as common sense, some not, but the overall structure of the book follows a thoughtful structure, prepending each chapter with visual examples to make sure the information sticks in the reader's mind.

Following in the research's footsteps, the author structured the book accordingly. The topics presented are interleaved, and early subjects are reviewed again in later chapters.

The book finishes with a more hands-on chapter, summarising and referencing earlier chapters for more in-depth details.
Of interest, the reader may also find various use cases from real-world businesses and learners that have successfully applied research-based ways of learning.

I would have liked to have more practical examples, tools, and techniques for mastering my memory, nonetheless, the book was satisfactory as it was. The overall impression the book left me was of a layman's instruction manual into human memory, redirecting readers interested in more advanced and practical applications to additional reading.

The main concepts are 4-5 stars but the book was repetitive and dragged with too many stories. Dropped rating also because of stories with police violence.

It's been awhile since I read this book, but I still remember key points like study where you will be tested and that forgetting information is actually a good thing because it causes you to learn and explore the information even more. It's a very interesting read and I highly recommend it.

This book was absolutely amazing. It is full of insightful information not only about how we learn, but it also goes into great detail about the different strategies out there and how to use them to learn better, and faster, and retain information longer. This is a must read for any teacher, or scholar, or person who just wants to improve their learning skills.

Great and applicable research on learning, but I think it can be a bit redundant at times. The core of the text is excellent, though.
