A protagonist who is the queen of unlikeable, crazy protagonists. A bunch of young boys who trust and need women too much. A best friend with a savior complex. A mental breakdown. A traumatic childhood. This checks EVERY box in my list of favorite tropes. Absolutely hated everything the protagonist did, from start to finish, which means it was perfect.
This really could have done with a closer look at her past and a faster pace though. That's the only complaint I have.

I’m genuinely not sure what to make of this book at all. I liked that it was from my hometown? I liked some of the social / political / class commentary throughout but it was really odd. Not at all what I was expecting, so much more violent and graphic - super uncomfortable in places! It was such a strange reading experience, I’d definitely check trigger / content warnings before reading this one! I didn’t do that and it was just almost the complete opposite of what the blurb seems to imply.

Notes:
- I actually really enjoyed the ambience and mood that this book created, it was great at being gritty, vulgar and dark.
- I wasn't blown away by the prose nor could i really find much substance in terms of implicit layers in the meanings/themes. This book did a great job at discussing gender, sexuality, drugs, mental instability, etc but it didn't really feel like it was trying to showcase these through ambiguous layers.
- Doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it though! The topics and scenes were taboo/explicit and I think writing about them this way was appeal enough and very cleverly executed on its own. Achieved being a good book through the premise and straightforward execution which I think is also something that can be rewarding as a reader.

This book was INSANE. It had like almost every content warning under the sun, and was very difficult to read at times. At the same time, it was really engaging. It was like I kept waiting for something horrific to happen, and then it did, but not in the way I expected. The characterization of the main character was very solid and it developed quite organically throughout the book. I also liked how the main character is objectively the worst person you've ever met and I personally was never rooting for her, but that didn't make me want to stop reading altogether.
