Two different Janine Browns of Cedar Falls, Iowa both her their name read on the Home & Garden TV network as winners of a dream house in Maine. They both make their way to Maine, thinking they've won the house.

For 5 years Janie has been a recluse after her fiancee died just two weeks before their wedding. Nean is the product of the foster system and has always be reliant on dubious boyfriends for housing. Together they, along with elderly Aunt Midge, make the dream house into a home.

Cover: Okay, but not compelling.
Narrators: Nice! The two women do a good job of keeping the two Janines straight.
Hogwarts Sorting Hat: Janie is pure Hufflepuff, while Nean is a reluctant Slytherin.

Themes: HGTV-ish dream house, Maine, Iowa, family, contest, secrets/lies

Great beach read. Both Janey and Nean are fun characters to get to know even if both also need to grow on you for a few chapters before you actually like them. Caution though, there is so much good food in this book that you may be inclined to eat way more while reading than you should. But also be inspired to cook more so that is a bonus!

3.5 stars. I call these light, easy books "palate cleansers". I read them after a tough book or series of books and when my brain just needs a break. This book is perfect for that. The characters are built up well, the storyline just engaging enough, predictable but not badly so. I recommend it if you want a holiday from thinking for awhile.

This author is my go-to for well-written, absorbing, comforting books on the lighter side of things.

I wanted a break from non fiction, and this was definitely it.
It’s not terrible, but you know exactly how the story will unfold and the writing gets more predictable and less enjoyable as it goes on.
I loved the description of the food, and the place setting of the mega house in Maine, but otherwise it’s as forgettable as every other beach read

I had a really hard time getting into this book and the characters never did interest me at all. Lots of cliches.
