Book #43 Read in 2013
The Good Luck Girls of Shipwreck Lane by Kelly Harms
A contest is being held where the winner would be given a dream home. The winner's name is Janine Brown. The only problem? There were two Janine Browns who entered the drawing. Janey, was entered into the contest by her Aunt Midge, is a shy woman who loves to cook. Nean is a down-on-her-luck sort of con artist who sees a way out if she wins this home. Both arrive to the dream house. Janey is the true winner and she and her Aunt Midge decide to let Nean stay for a while. After that, their lives take a very different turn from their normal way of life.
This book was a good read. Janey and Nean were interesting characters, though I did want to slap Nean several times throughout the book. Aunt Midge was quite the character; she reminded me of Grandma Mazur from the Stephanie Plum books. This book was a mix of culinary tidbits, romance and a look at life.
I received a copy of this book from BookBrowse in exchange for a review.

I am going to mimic another reviewer by saying this book is a “palate cleanser.”
Background to this review: I started to read romances a few years ago. After reading quite a few...I started to develop a profile for romances that I like. I have been on the hunt for the romance/happy ending/transformative novels that don’t have “bodice ripping” scenes. AND, the author can throw in some wit and relatibiliy. I was going to add believeability...but many books aren’t really believable since most characters are able to transform themselves in 200 pages.

I love when a book I have no real expectations for manages to impress me! The Good Luck Girls of Shipwreck Lane is a feel good story that has a little bit of everything. Three lost souls, all in different stages of their lives, are thrown together after the unusual circumstance of winning a dream home, sort of. There’s romance, food, and even some humor. This book left me wanting to have a good meal, a good cry, and to read more by this author!
Quick easy read. With a book this focused on food, I was hoping for some recipes at the back, but there weren't any. Big conflicts in the storyline got resolved a little too easily, which made it feel a bit shallow. Males characters had no depth, were all two-dimensional. But it had a lot of lovely and fun moments, mostly due to the Aunt Midge character.

Enjoyable light read.
I have no idea who said "write what you know" or why, but if it were me I would say "because otherwise you're going to piss off the people who DO know." The ocean in Maine is FRIGID in June. June is not the month you say "the ocean is cold *even* in June" because it doesn't warm up until July. Making potato salad right before you serve it is a mistake. Making mustard takes thirty seconds. Hollandaise sauce is not something an accomplished cook has trouble with, and no one who bakes more than casually thinks "the back of the chocolate chip cookie bag" is the best recipe for chocolate chip cookies. Also, why would you scoop out puff pastry to add filling? Why not just flatten it? It doesn't become dense, and keeps the integrity of the bottom. ANYWAY. This book was fine. But I'm not convinced the author has ever been to Maine or baked from scratch.
