My feelings about this series are too complex to easily summarise, and I don’t think I know how to rate it. I loved the characters, enjoyed the world and hated the deep seated anti Mongolic racism that is a crucial element to several characters as well as the entire plot of the series. Could have really done without that personally. Is it good? Idk. Gu Yun is maybe one of my favourite characters of all time.

This one was hard for me to get through. I really loved this series and still do. This book wrapped up everything so quickly and abruptly. The extras were OK but I really wish we would have gotten a special edition with the goodies.

Sighs happily. What a joy it was to reread these books again.
I remembered some of the extras but not all of them. I also couldn’t recall that the emperor was killed so late in the story. That my brain is such a sieve when it comes to recounting all details of a story (or other information I had learned already) is often embarrassing to me but totally worth it when it comes to rereading books. I usually know the bigger picture but not the intricacies of the plot and am able to discover it all over again.
A superb surprise was the afterword by priest herself. Let’s end this little introspective review with this quote of hers:
“This way, in the handful of hours during which readers immersed themselves in this story, they could forget the trials and tribulations of life and find some small measure of solace.”
