In describing this to my wife after reading it to Cosi, my three year old, I realized that it is a moral tale for geeky kids. The way that Watt narrates the story is not so much by illustrations as lists, charts, diagrams, and maps.

Which helps!

After reading it, Cosi looked me in the eyes and said, "Daddy, I want to go in the book!" I think that's about as fine a compliment as one can give a book.

I love Scaredy Squirrel! -but I think he would be very hard to read for a story time. It might be fun to try, though. The humor would be appreciated by elementary school age children. I can imagine a lot of commenting on what's happening being added to the story.

In this book Scaredy Squirrel decides he wants a friend but is afraid of anything that might bite. That doesn't leave much besides a fish. (boring). Scaredy finally realizes that a dog will make a good friend even though he has teeth.

Scaredy Squirrel never seems to disappoint me! These books are all so cute and fun. This is probably one of my most favorite ones though. Scaredy Squirrel decides that the perfect friend is a goldfish. Why? Because they are germ-free and don't have any teeth, of course. But Scaredy Squirrel's plans to obtain this friend don't go quite as he had planned out. After all, sometimes we find friends in unexpected places. This is a great read if you are looking for a good laugh. Scaredy's risk test was definitely my favorite part!

Scaredy Squirrel learns that sometimes things not going according to plan was the real plan all along.

Warning! This sequel is just as awesome as (if not just a tad bit more than) the first Scaredy Squirrel adventure. I insist that you read it! And laugh... right after you have brushed your teeth with "germ-fighting toothpaste" and have made sure that there is no nutty breath OR food caught between your teeth.

You may proceed.

Packed with a new set of creatures that Scaredy Squirrel is cautious around, diagrams of The Perfect Friend, and a checklist on "How to make the Perfect First Impression", Scaredy Squirrel is back to delight us.

And this time, he brought a friend.

My four-year-old says this book is "powerful and sweet." I should really get this kid his own Goodreads profile.

(The star rating is mine. My son would give it five, but I knock off one star for every thirty times I've read a book.)

Melanie Watt, Scaredy Squirrel Makes a Friend (Kids Can, 2007)

Scaredy Squirrel is back, and despite finding many ways to occupy his time, he's decided he needs a friend. One day he spies a goldfish in the birdbath near the tree (how'd it get there? No idea) and decides that a goldfish would make the perfect friend. He devises a cunning plan to get from the tree to the birdbath, but of course things can't go quite right... I actually liked this one better than the first Scaredy Squirrel book; there's more of a flow to it, more of a rhythm to the language, and it just seems to work better. A fun little book. *** ½

WARNING: You must brush your teeth with germ-fighting toothpaste before reading this review! (Ha! Couldn't resist!)

There are so many PERFECT little details in the Scaredy Squirrel stories! While this second book follows pretty much the same pattern as the first, it still feels quite unique and so clever that I didn't feel bored with it at all. I LOVE what happens when Scaredy Squirrel's "perfect" plan for making a friend goes awry. So far, Scaredy Squirrel's ultimate plan of "if all else fails, play dead" has worked out well for him. Will that continue? I'm anxious to find out! 4.5 stars.
