Wow. This was an interesting book; I had never known anything about the seige Leningrad. This author really made me feel what it must have been like, and though that is very stark, I really appreciated it.

This book was very decadent.

This would have been an excellent and intriguing story (how often do you see a WW2 novel set in Leningrad?!) had it not been so vulgar. I understand sex sells but there is no need to have descriptive smut on nearly every page. The majority of it was unnecessary and quite frankly unrealistic. What person is honestly thinking about sex while they’re half starved and the Germans are bombing their city?

That chess scene at the end was something else though.

When I first sat down with this book, I originally planned to just get started and eventually finish it sometime within the next few days. As it turned out, "within the next few days" ended up becoming several hours of a single afternoon, half of which were spent on the edge of my seat as I felt myself be transported right there to besieged Leningrad and the war-ravaged lands surrounding it. I don't think I would have been able to stop myself even if I tried - not that I wanted to.

If historical fiction is your preference yet you haven't given this a shot yet, then I recommend that you send "City of Thieves" right to the front of the line of your to-read itinerary.

Loved it! Took me a while to get through, but I'm that way with most historical fiction. It was a witty, unique, and lovely read, albeit a bit cliche with the ending.

The characters were so well done, and the story never bored me. Great read honestly. #DoRecommend.
