In the first issue of Dragon Ball, we meet Goku, a naive monkey-tailed boy who has no idea about the modern world. He meets Bulma, a girl on a quest to discover the dragon balls and get her one wish from the great dragon, Shenlong. Bulma convinces Goku to come along for the ride, and together, they begin the hunt for the dragon balls.

The first time I read this, I really wasn’t too keen on it. After deciding to sell my copies of volumes 01-04, and noting I had not reviewed them, I decided to give them a quick reread and see what happened and refresh my memory.

The first thing I noticed about it the second time around, was the art work. It’s quite simple in some ways, but I enjoy it. It’s almost childish in certain ways, but it’s enjoyable. It’s simple, and I personally love it. I know that a lot of people would normally be against such a simple style, but I much prefer the simpler art works. Less to take in, much more to be able to appreciate.

However, I really didn’t enjoy this. I didn’t enjoy it the first time, and I didn’t enjoy it the second time around either. I read it more due to it being a relatively popular manga, and I wanted to see what everyone loved about it, but I never got this myself. I’ve never really understood why so many people love Dragon Ball, and I don’t think I’ll ever be one of these people. From what I remember, it picks up around Volume 04, and I might read on to then to see what happens and see if my interest is piqued, but Volume 01-03 really doesn’t do it for me. It’s a shame, I would have loved to be able to immerse myself in this more.

Still 3/5 for me; hopefully, I’ll enjoy the rest of the series more.
