That feeling you get at the end of Knives Out or Sherlock when the detective explains everything and all the pieces come together and it’s so satisfying?! That’s exactly what it felt like every time a Wallbreaker started talking and it was so good!

The sheer scope of this book is absolutely insane and my mind was blown over and over again. The sci-fi is so dense, but then it also explores the human condition more deeply than other books I've studied for english class? Immaculate.

Minus one star for the weird imaginary girlfriend plot line, it took me a lot to overlook that.

I'm going to be honest -- the first half of this book was a struggle, primarily due to the characters.  I found the large cast difficult to keep up with and each seemed poorly developed. I also took issue with the fact that the cast was so large but featured very few characters that were women. The few woman characters that did exist seemed to be sexist caricatures. However, after

Luo Ji's wife and child are forced into hibernation

I found the rest of the book to be very enjoyable. Cixin Liu is incredible at writing plot and coming up with invigorating twists, widespread social commentary, and explaining complicated concepts.  There were some maybe unnecessarily wordy parts but I think that contributes to his distinct writing style.

This one was an improvement over the first one. The first had a lot of technical jargon and physics concepts that were were overly complicated to understand and didn't further the story enough. This still has enough science to make the reader think and contemplate big ideas without slowing the story. The female characters are still a bit flat but the writing is markedly better.
