I'm not really sure why, but I loved this book. The author's style is unique - very long sentences, almost no paragraph breaks - but it was absolutely captivating. Despite the ugliness (violence, sexual assault, discrimination, drug and alcohol abuse) and gritty-feel, the writing kept me enraptured. I think I will try to get the Spanish version as well because I have a feeling that reading it in its original language will be even more impactful.

This was great - a blend of horror, crime, and folklore, written in an enthralling, colloquial, stream of consciousness. It’s ultimately a book about evil and violence, reflecting a deeply rotten society, and at times it’s difficult reading, but there are also glimmers of beauty, of closeted desire rarely captured in such a raw way. Very excited to read more of Melchor’s work in the future.

Well written, but I probably wouldn’t have listened to it if I had seen any content warnings. Some things are just too dark to be listening to while you make dinner, you know?

Trigger Warning: violence, child abuse, homophobia.
This is such a claustrophobic novel, filled with paranoia and long, winding sentences that cause the reader to feel as if they cannot take a breath. It is very atmospheric and definitely accomplishes a horrific feel throughout the plot.
