The author clearly had a lot of fun with this. There's a lot of humour, not always to my taste but funny when it landed, and a lot of love put into the main band of characters. Outside of that core cast on their main quest it does get a little bit shaky.

After my long hiatus from reading much of anything that didn't have the name Abercrombie or Keene on the cover, it's pretty damn delightful to come across a first time author that managed to wow me.
Like, seriously.
Were it not for the fact that this 500 page first novel in The Band series was a trifle less impactful let's say (to avoid spoilers) than I tend to like them, this would have been a five star read for me.
A fantastic MC, well fleshed out side characters, thrilling moments, enjoyable battles, impossible odds, and, incredibly, a vein of humour throughout that is genuinely funny puts this above most other debut novels.
The fact that Eames mined this idea from imagining that mercenary bands would be like massive rock bands is just the icing on this incredibly enjoyable cake.
I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys fantasy novels, but I'm 100% certain I'm literally the last such person on the planet to read this, so, yay for me, I guess.
4.5 (rounding Up to 5) Charred and Chipped Wooden Shields for Kings of the Wyld.

I thought this book was excellent. The story had funny moments mixed with challenging ones throughout.
Not my top read of the year, but it is the most impressed I've been with descriptive writing in a long time. More than once I stopped to reread a section because the picture it painted was so vivid I couldn't move on without seeing it again.

This is my second time reading this book, and this time I listened to the “Booktrack” version, which scores the whole audiobook with music that matches the scenes. I LOVED the music, made adventuring with my favorite Band all the more enjoyable.
Hey, this book is really fun. And heartfelt. And funny. Chapter 49, Immortality, is one of my favorite chapters of fantasy I’ve ever read, and I cried just as much this time as I did the first time.
