This is on my top 5 books of all times list! I still find it ironic that I ended up marrying a man from a family of 12! I would love to see a modern movie interpretation of this book. I would love to read this book with high school student and have a discussion on who should play what role in the movie adaptation.
This is a great book about a family of 12 children. Thy happen to be a local family, living in Montclair NJ. Th parents are time and motion study scientisets. They help companies learn how to work faster. The father tries out his heories on all the kids. It is a fun book to read.
This book is so funny. It's allot different then the movie.
The absolute best!! Love this book. I have read a lot of family stories this year and this one blew me away. At times hilarious and heart-wrenching (aren't the best stories always these two things?). It was nice to read a positive family story in contrast to the others I read about homelessness and neglect.
There were times where I didn't care for this book, for certain aspects of the family's life or whatnot. But overall I loved it because everyone does things differently and if your children love and respect you, and they're happy and well taken care of, who am I to say you're doing it or you did it wrong
The love of this family was very clear. The end was just a little hard in me (get the tissues out).

Someone picked this for our book club book. I remember my dad reading it and enjoying it when I was a kid, but I've read a lot of nonfiction lately and, when I read it, I'm mostly not interested in reading white cis-people nonfiction, so I wasn't necessarily excited about this.
So I was pleasantly surprised that I really enjoyed it quite a lot! It's so fun and lively and the family is really inspiring in their love of learning and their rambunctious playfulness. It had me laughing out oid at parts and I was so sad that the dad passed away before the little ones could really know him. (Sorry for that spoiler.)
But I would completely hesitate to recommend this to other readers because of the MANY racial slurs! I know it was a different era, but as a contemporary reader it was REALLY grating! It makes me grateful for the ways literature has improved.

And the winner for the worst movie adaptation is Cheaper by the Dozen (2003). Aside from the number of children, nothing of this 1948 (set in the 1920s) classic was included in the film. Cheaper by the Dozen by Frank B. Gilbreth and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey features a husband-and-wife engineering team who traveled the world giving lectures and improving factory efficiency. This short book, lovingly written by two of the children, includes many vignettes such as how they earned money by bidding on household chores (“The lowest bidder got the contract.”) and how they satirized their father’s lectures (“For the purpose of convenience,” [the child satirist] began pompously, “I have divided my talk tonight into thirty main headings and one hundred and seventeen subheadings. I will commence with the first main heading. …”). Highly recommended. An efficient use of your time.

I was surprised when walking by the book cart at the hospital when I saw Cheaper by the Dozen. My family loves the Steve Martin movie so I paid the dollar for the book.
Both the book and the movie are about a large family (12 kids) but then the diverge.
I love the dedication in the front of the book:
To Dad who only reared twelve children
To Mother who reared twelve only children.
This book is not linear so you do not get a sense of how the family progressed and how order was brought about, but instead the books is filled with anecdotes and stories, mainly about their father. He was fun, smart, innovative man but also hard, demanding, and arrogant.
Because the story is old (1949) and and the writing is evidence of Frank and Ernestine's superior intellect, I found the read to be dry and difficult much of the time.
I found the family and especially the parents very fascinating. I look forward to reading their second book Belles on Their Toes
