It's difficult to tell how good an introduction to the Malazan universe this is for a first time reader like me. There's certainly a lot of magic and gods and dragons knocking about. But much of the book seems to focus on the personal lives and interpersonal relationships of characters we're given little reason to care about but who may end up being important in later books. Who knows?

A fantastic start to a sprawling, ambitious, and intriguing series, that I can only imagine will continue to get better and better.

Up to 4.5 on reread. Such a great introduction to a beloved world. Steve lays so much of the series out for you on the second time through and it made for a much more enjoyable experience. First in last out!!
