i really couldn’t stand the writing style. i understand the purpose of the character perspective, but the sentence structure was brutal.

Just finished "One of the Good Guys" by Araminta Hall on loan from @libby.app.

Leaning toward a 4-star rating. This is a quick read - a mix of narratives involving heavy themes of women's right, sexual abuse, trauma and the social commentary that encompasses those themes. It is part of Gillian Flynn publishing group and that is apparent as there is a lot of "Gone Girl" energy in this book.

This is not a whodunnit mystery. It's an examination of the problematic and danger of self-proclaimed good guys. It shows that abuse, control and perspective are nuanced things.

It's definitely a discussion starter book. I can see why this book could be controversial to some. It gives you something to think about - thus what pushed my rating to a 4.

I just found the main male character very off putting, and I'm assuming it might get better when I got to the other characters but the story felt like it wasn't going to go well and I wanted something a bit lighter.

Infuriating (complimentary). That's how this book made me feel. Is it a horror book if it's a reflection of real life? (Yes).

I don't think I've ever hated a main character more. Hall effortlessly crafted narratives and taglines and bullshit that I see and hear everyday online and in-person. So many times I caught myself frowning or rolling my eyes at something. The anxiety of womanhood is weaved through this book, it genuinely made my skin itchy at times. And I certainly wasn't expecting the ending. An excellent read.

The production of the audiobook made me want to bump up to 4 stars but the story itself is a 3.
