The fact that Martin's dull prose and the story that I've known through and through for a long time still goes down like warm butter is a testament to GRRM's greatness.
This third book became so thick (1123 pages) that many publishers split it in two volumes.
The first volume (Steel and Snow) continues from where the second book ended.
The (Civil?) War is at its peak.
Violence, magic, and various intertwined plots are increasing.
We slowly approach the end of the year (299 AC) and the beginning of the new year (300 AC) and the new volume.

If I hear "You know nothing, Jon Snow." ever again I will scream.

*UPDATE: I said I would have to come back to this review and sure enough, having just finished the second part of this story, I can confirm this is without a DOUBT a 5 star book as a whole and probably my favouritebook in the series so far.*
I'm probably going to have to come back to this rating once I've finished the second part of this book. I'm rating this 4 stars for now as I'm basing it purely on what I've read so far, however, it would obviously be unfair to not rate this in line with how I felt about the book in its' entirety.
So far though, still really enjoying this series. If I had any issue is that is seems to have almost halted the pace I felt the first two books had. It's no surprise the book set I have split this book into two because it is just stuffed with information, sometimes interesting, sometimes not.

Thanks to my friends. I need to appreciate their works for trying to spoil me. They watched the series and I'm planning to watch it after reading the books. So you know now, how they threatened to fire the spoilers at me. Sometimes I would be so shocked that I need to know what will happen next immediately as the characters have alternate POVs we won't know until their next. In that case, I will ask them, they will explain so nicely and when I tried to relieve my breath in sigh they would drop the spoiler too. And then I was like "Screw me for asking". So after a lot of battling with them, I finished it finally.
-- One part down. One more to go.
-- I like the book sure, but I just couldn’t understand the hype about it.
-- The plot was not enough fast-paced when compared to the first two books.
-- As always, the writing was appealing.
-- For God’s sake, I’m having A LOT OF trouble with remembering their names.
-- The world is quite complex.
-- I definitely had some moments with this book.

Now I'm big fan of the series. However some said that part 1 of the third book was somewhat interminable, I found every dialogue either witty or slutty or simply brilliant. Can't wait for part 2!
a great continuation of the story and I love getting details filled in where the show misses them or differs
Addictive! Life's on hold and reading my eyes out to find out what happens next. Just hope by the time I get to the fifth, Martin will have written the sixth.
Having not got this far when watching the television series I was glad to not have anything to compare it to as I fear I would have been trying to get my head around the differences that started to appear. I can honestly say that I loved this book even more than the first two: be it because of having nothing to compare it to or whether it was just the storyline itself I cannot say.
I think the main reason I enjoyed this book so much is that there is so much development for a number of characters. Up until this point I’d had a dislike for Sansa yet I found that this book seemed to change that. My love for Arya grew massively. In fact, I grew to love all of the Stark’s more. I also really enjoyed Jaime’s story… Okay, I admit it: I loved everyone’s story in this book. With less focus upon the war and more focus upon the stories of the individual characters I found it a really gripped read. In fact, I managed to get through this book in next to no time at all – and that wasn’t just due to it being shorter than the two previous books. The writing is still that easily accessible and gripping style we have grown to love, and still as vivid as the first two books. It is most certainly my favourite thus far and I’d picked up the second part as soon as I finished the last word.
Filled with twists and turns it continues along the great storyline that exists throughout the series. You really do need to appreciate the magic world that Martin has created along with all the brilliant characters.
