I've always enjoyed reading books about time travel and this book puts an interesting spin on the concept. It really delves into what the consequences would be of being able to easily travel through time. I was intrigued by the mystery/thriller part of this book as well which kept me turning pages. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.
Decent. Intriguing. But I wanted more from it, somehow. My rating may have been hurt by high expectations.
3.5 that I want so badly to round up. I loved the first half!
Time Travel book that isn't hung up on the rules
I just don't get why so many time travel stories seem to spend so much time explaining rules and how paradoxes work. Mascarenhas pretty clearly puts her foot down and says "No, doesn't matter." It's all about how being able to go back and forth in time affects you mentally, and those around you.
At least two great mysteries from the start
Did Barbara's breakdown have anything to do with time travel?
Who is the body in the basement and how did they get there?
Fun exploration of a mini-society of time travelers
Yes, of course they'd be super horny.
==============
But then the middle came and went and the magic started to disappear...it's like the author realized "Ah shoot I gotta finish my book!" and takes wild turns to get to her end. It kind of drops the pretension that it's an homage to the impact of female scientists like Hidden Figures and becomes very plotty, and very predictable :(.
The main characters don't have much characterization
Ruby seems nice?
Odette seems spunky?
(Odette, by the way, is not a very good detective...she literally runs up to a member of the Conclave and starts rapid-firing extremely suspicious questions).
And if your name isn't Margaret, you'll probably fade out of memory. Most other characters seem to be defined by how depressed and/or horny they get.
So many story lines and characters are absolute fluff
Ginger, the wishy-washy hookup.
Incredibly forced romances
In the second half, Mascarenhas seems to have frantically decided her characters needed girlfriends or boyfriends. And I mean needed now.
Ruby
Odette
Not that much Psychology...
The main thing is time travelers can be pretty cruel, nihilistic, (obviously horny), and out of touch...the end.
The world is pretty unchanged for having Time Travelers...
On one hand, it's great the book focuses on the characters and not the ho-hum details of time travel. But when a dead body shows up in a locked room, the fact people don't immediately say "Oh, time travel was probably involved" is mind-boggling.

Spoiler
It's really not clear to me why Grace and Ruby like each other besides being both young and attractive, and that Grace knows she'll eventually be with Ruby anyway.Odette
Spoiler
We're literally in the last chapters and Odette is suddenly paired off with a guy we barely know? Why bother? Not that much Psychology...

Slow start but pace picks up. Can be a bit confusing with the timelines but think this is deliberate. On reflection, not quite sure how I feel about it.
