I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. Many thanks to NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for the review copy.

I was so excited to read this book when it hit my queue, and boy did it live up to the hype. Mascarenhas’ debut novel is such a strange, twisty, delightful ball of fun! With its mystery wrapped in several points of view and various timelines, and its cast full of amazing women, it keeps you entranced and guessing until the very end.

Original approach and a lot of good ideas are bogged down by unexciting writing, boring characters and poor world-building.

This was a good book. Definitely a twist on time-travel I had not yet experienced. And the mental health consequences of a career of timeline hopping, well that was definitely an interesting layer. If you enjoy spec. fic and don't mind turning some long accepted time-travel tropes on their heads, give this book a go. Just keep an open mind....
adventurous dark mysterious

Enjoyed this but the reveal felt anti-climactic. Also, thinking about it makes my head hurt a little, because time travel, and all that. I think Odette was my favorite, and I appreciated her arc a lot.

LOVED this. it was so complex and fun. i loved the portraits of ~women in science and how flawed and varied they all were, through different times and generations. i loved how despicable a character margaret was, even from her own perspective. so good.

my only weak spots were ruby and grace; i felt really bad for ginger, and also wanted that loop closed a bit better. ginger needed another pov chapter. additionally, i wish lucille had been a more prominent character and it's a little discomfiting that she wasn't. i wanted to know more about her and george and her work at the conclave.

I hadn't expected to enjoy this book as much as I did! It was a really original take on time travel and I loved the closer analysis of what it could do to a person mentally. I also loved the whole murder mystery aspect, and the f/f romance was excellent! It was also very satisfying to see how all the different storylines were woven together and I found myself wanting to go back and reread passages once I knew the greater meaning behind them! My only issue was that the variety of POVs over different timelines meant sometimes it was a little hard to keep track of who was who, and there were also some characters I wanted to know more about, but overall I really liked this!

Sometimes before I tell you about a book, I like to tell you where I sit before I tell you where I stand. You should probably know I’ve got a thing for time travel. Time travel and vampires. I love books about time travel. Time travel makes me think. Sometimes time travel can give me a headache.

I know time travel isn’t for everyone. I have a feeling that with this particular read, people will love it or hate it. I loved it. I love thinking about the ins and outs and complexity of time travel and just all the possibilities.

In 1967, four female scientists work together to invent a time-traveling machine. The invention is a success, the Conclave is created, and time-traveling becomes a profession. For three of the four women; the fourth (Barbara) has a nervous breakdown and is forced to leave the project. Flash forward 50 years to 2017. Barbara receives a mysterious clipping from the future: in five months, an unidentified woman will be murdered. Is Barbara the victim? The murderer? Barbara’s granddaughter Ruby is determined to find out more.

To tell the story, Ms. Mascarenhas jumps around through time. While the timeline is out of order, the information is presented in a way that makes sense for the reader to learn more about the Conclave, the characters, and the mystery of the dead woman. The story is actually pretty complex, and it can get a little confusing as the time travelers themselves do not live their life on a linear timeline. I really enjoyed little “aha!” moments and small threads that connected throughout the story as I read.

Like I said, I know time travel isn’t for everyone. This book is full of strong female characters and mystery. And time travel. And it was a great pick for me to start the year with.

(note:sexual content, handguns, death)

I really enjoyed this sci-fi murder mystery! All the PoV characters are women and I liked the time travelling Granny and her granddaughter’s tenderness for each other.
