A really deep and personal book. I knew basically the whole story about the Largo show and the things that happened to her that year, but putting it in the greater context of her life is really fascinating and interesting.
I dig the honesty and rawness of Tig's story. It's a relatable read for any human but even more so for those who have lost a parent that they didn't always have the best relationship with.

It took me a little while to get into this, even though it was such a short book. Tig goes through her mother's past, her family history, and her time being sick with C-diff and cancer in a haphazard way. I ended up catching the rhyme and reason of it when I read a chunk in a row, so I would recommend committing time to it all at once.
This book was like the movie Nomadland. Really well written, an interesting gem of a story, and a main character you truly felt for. They were also super depressing and not what I thought I was getting into. I found Tig and her dry comedy fantastic and loved her in Instant Family and Star Trek, so I thought this would be a great memoir by a comedian full of laughs. All in all a great telling of an impossible year, but it was rarely humorous.
What Notaro's memoir captures is how easy it is be zooming along in life and then be stopped in your tracks out of the blue. While not as strong as her stand-up, this remains a solid, candid memoir.
I loveeee Tig Notaro so when I heard her mention this book on the SmartLess podcast I had to check it out. She’s hilarious, period. I read this in a day and it reminds me of that Steel Magnolias quote- “Laughter through tears is my favorite emotion.” It’s raw, real, and somehow comforting. Tig is incredible.
The story behind the viral standup set at Largo where the comedian told the audience (and thus the world) that she had cancer.
Funny, touching, and so honest about tough topics. The tight storytelling, likely honed from years of performances, is what edges this memoir out from others.

I felt like I knew the general plot of this book having heard Tig’s standup and reading articles about her experiences – but I guess that’s also why I picked it up?
