This book made me break a few personal rules. Number 1 - stop reading when it's tedious; Number 2 - don't read multi-volume books. Half-way through, I was struggling, coming up against rule Number 1 (dont't finish it and cut your losses; read something else), because the main character was dull, and there was a series of things done to him which, while inventive, didn't make him more interesting.
But the protagonist developed, as did his connection with the world.
What finally convinced me to read the next book was the final scene in "Ascends". Nice reconciliation of plot lines, exciting adventures, and a description of heights that left me - as someone scared of heights - with a pulse jump at a few places. Well done.

Very slow to start but with a really cool concept, SENLIN ASCENDS follows boring schoolmaster Thomas Senlin as he grows increasingly desperate and starts doing more and more ridiculous things in order to find his wife, whom he misplaced during their honeymoon. But, alas, the story meanders so far from Senlin and his wife that it becomes a story of conspiracy, violence, and whackiness.

There are long periods in the story where absolutely nothing happens, where the characters are so wildly unbelievable, where it's almost impossible to buy in to what's happening next. I had so much trouble believing the decisions that Senlin makes, the people who act against him, and the people that help him (often the same people) that even as the plot got more exciting I couldn't buy it, as intriguing as the Tower of Babel is.

I would consider reading the rest of the series if I got audiobooks from the library, but I wouldn't go out of my way to buy them
