This was the first of Margaret George's books that I read and my favorite. I was sucked in to Cleopatra's world and didn't want to leave. I was drawn to this book many times before I ever got up the courage to read it because of it's intimidating length. I am so glad I finally read it and when it was finished, I wished it was even longer!
Very interesting, but could have been 400 pages shorter! I do always enjoy George's sympathetic take on fairly non-sympathetic characters.

This is one of my favorite books of all time. As others said, a very long, long book. It takes a while to plow through it all, but I felt it was very well researched and was intrigued by the historical accuracy. Of course, I am no scholar in Egyptian history. I loved getting to know George's version of Cleopatra and was glad that they explored her sensuality, her strength and her vulnerability.
Very...of it's time. By which I mean the 90s. Reduced Cleopatra's entire story to Caesar, and apining for Caesar when he's not around.

Excellent. I found this novel although it extremely long beautifully written and captured the life and times of Cleopatra, the last Pharaoh or Queen of Egypt. The author was fastidious in doing research and albeit a work of historical fiction most likely comes close to the real thoughts of this iconic woman. It is very entertaining and no doubt will remain as the best work written for her. I thought it was a bonus at the end with the thoughts of the author.
In Classic Margaret George style- this book was informative and engaging.
Unfortunately I compared it to

which is not fair, because I am more interested in those subject than in Cleopatra.
But as always this was a thoroughly enjoyable read.
