“Give a man a fish, and he’ll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he’ll eat for a lifetime.” What they don’t say is, “And it would be nice if you gave him a fishing rod.” Noah's book is a coming of age story not just of him, but also of a South Africa freshly emerged from Apartheid. Born a Crime makes you feel a pang of shame for underestimating, or perhaps never fully apprehending, the impact of Apartheid that plagued SA even into the 90s. Narrated in a true Trevor Noah style, this book can make you chuckle at a teenage Trevor's attempts at hiding his misdemeanors, and the very next moment heave a sigh of sorrow for a single mother who suffered incessantly trying to live a life most others take for granted. A must-read (I'd rather suggest listening to the audiobook narrated by the author himself).
