This is certainly a very intense and hard book to read but putting this in the little boy’s perspective is absolutely genius. There is so much in this book that is upsetting but the boy’s unyielding optimism and inability to understand the darkness around him truly highlights what is to be learned from the story. 4/5 stars mainly because the ending did not feel quite right
A very creepy book. One of the few books I had to put down because I was too scared of what was going to happen next.
The POV is interesting, and a times a little annoying but it serves the book really well. I felt like everything was realistic. No character was entirely good and Jack and Ma both had a lot of flaws.

I read this movie immediately after finishing, and loving, the movie that was based on it. I enjoyed the book but there were a few things I didn't like. I liked reading the book from Jack's perspective, however I did feel she tried too hard to make him sound childish. She could have written the story through his innocent eyes without causing the story to be written unintelligently. I know several 4 year olds who are better spoken than Jack, even though he's 5 and is supposed to be able to read and write pretty well. Presumably, he should have better syntax than the voice she gave him. This honestly was the biggest issue I took with the book as it made the book a little tedious to get through at times. The second half of the book was also a good bit slower than the first. Overall, I would recommend reading it because the story is good, you just have to be able to accept being slightly annoyed by the narration.
At the beginning of the novel, I was amazed by how well the writer describes the story through Jack's point of view. Her choice of words and delivery were just amazing. However, the book just gets boring soon after that.

This is more of a 3.5 star review. I did enjoy reading this but mostly because of my fascination with the developmental psychology aspect of the story. The narrative voice is a little annoying but it is at times comical and eye-opening. The story ends abruptly though and I did feel like the author could have done a better job with the conclusion. Over all, it's an interesting and easy read.
4.5 stars. Interesting account of a young woman's seven-year captivity and the challenges she and her five-year-old son face after their escape.
