Okay. Honestly there are so many reasons why I shouldn't have enjoyed this book as much as I did, and any look at the top one star reviews for this book can point out some of them. I primarily read for entertainment though, and even though some of the comments the characters made pissed me off (Kelsea all but saying ugly people shouldn't have confidence) I could write it off as - well, yes, that's some bull sugar, but maybe it's just written to be a flaw (I mean Kelsea is only 19 and had literally only met 2 people in her entire life). Like people, characters shouldn't be perfect.

Then there was the fact that the Queen's Guard just seemed so incompetent. They have trackers, but they're chilling with a fire and drinking and having a jolly time and do not appear to care what happens to the Queen. I would believe that of a crap guard but the way they are written about paints a tale where actually these men are the best of the best... Right.

There were some other inconsistencies like this, and also some annoying comments by characters or just the narrative (throwing around whore and some poorly veiled slut-shame-y feels coming from main character Kelsea) in addition to some characters that seemed pretty damn cliche and not really pulling it off well like at all (The Fetch, who is at the end of this book still undeniably the most uninteresting character when he's supposed to be so enigmatic and bad boy and ooo I'm a dick but you secretly love me because I'm sexy and mystery wow; I mean I know how the author wanted him to come off and sadly she just failed)

Speaking of The Fetch and Kelsea, I think what pissed me off the most about this book was the weird Stockholm syndrome after she gets captured and she's like falling all over herself to impress this weird hottie and thank him and indebt herself because he chose not to kill her... Repeat: she was kidnapped and he told her he was considering killing her. He might have been bluffing but he very well might have and said if she had begged she would have been down. But... She THANKED HIM. Basically looked him up and down like "mm momma wants some meat and I know yousa murderer and that I should care but I dun care I DUN CARE GIVE ME YOUR D" exaggerated because she's 19 and naive but okay you get me.

So all that aside...

Honestly I freaking loved this book. I'm sorry. I have no shame. But once I got into the swing of the book some chapters in either the inconsistencies or irks didn't exist or I easily overlooked them. I thought the pacing was good, and I enjoy a slow build. ;) Some characters that seemed really dull and one dimensional took on such a luster by the end of the book and I felt so vested in them I was praying this wasn't a stand alone. And here I was trying to avoid getting into another damn trilogy.

I particularly really loved Lazarus and also Kelsea's foster parents and Pen. I'm also pleasantly surprised that there was no real love interest or romance and I'm curious to see where the author goes with it. At the moment it seems like Kelsea's just a horny teenager who really wants to bone but she's trying to deny it. Welp.

I also liked the court parts even though some of it was a little unbelievable all things considered...

There's exciting bits and sad bits and I really felt some of that emotion while reading. I was so entertained the whole time. I really really enjoyed it and can't wait to read the second book. I recommend reading it for yourself but I get the feeling this is a love hate sort of book for people. Dare I say, I loved reading it? Frankly I won't be surprised if you don't though. Don't judge me I get it, I understand the pain! Guilty pleasures are my vice!

I don't normally read fantasy, but this one drew me in! This book does have parallels to real life to me, in that often things go on for so long and in the end we don't know why they are happening, and just get so used to things that they aren't changed. I liked Kelsea and her desire for changing what had gone on for so long, even if she may be naive in some ways. It was hard at times to keep the characters' names straight, but I look forward to reading the other books in the series to continue on with these characters. What a great first book. It pulled me in and I wish I had the next one.

That main character is a strong female lead as the book progresses. She did start out a little weak but this is a coming of age type book and it wouldn't have been as good if she didn't have to grow as a character.

The book does leave a lot of questing at the end. But that's seems to be helping set up the next book.

Review forthcoming.

I really enjoyed reading this book and it stayed with me for a long time after I finished. I felt that each element it presented added to the excitement of it and, whenever I was able to read, it was firmly attached to my hand….I felt that the book was unique and that the setting, an antiquated future where books are as rare as they were in Gutenberg’s time, was quite innovative as well as thought-provoking. I enjoyed the references to what is, for us, modern-day Great Britain and the United States. I felt that each reference was a sort of inside-joke/Easter egg for readers to savor….
