There isn't anything I particularly disliked in this book, but there wasn't anything I particularly loved either. It does everything it sets out to do for the most part. Also, since I've put down this book I've been trying to put my finger on what exactly it was about Kelsea that turned me off, but... more than a single major flaw, it a collection of small things she says and does that rubbed me the wrong way. The author seems eager to establish Kelsea as a focused, just, and powerful female protagonist, but it comes at the expense of characterization and plot. It seems a little ridiculous that every single 'good' character is in full support of Kelsea immediately, even while Kelsea's every word is tinged with a fair degree of self-righteousness, and she seems incapable of understanding opposing viewpoints in any capacity.

The world building was interesting, and I enjoyed the informative excerpts at the beginning of each chapter.

Great world building

Review to follow shortly...

I really enjoyed this book. I liked watching the main character grow and I'm interested to see how this all plays out. Recommend it!

3.5

Odd time setting being old fantasy style setting but in the future? Really interesting world and characters though.

Exciting fantasy novel.

4.5/5

What a page turner! I'm looking forward to reading the second book shortly (I have a few others to read first). I have to somewhat agree with some other reviewers who likened this story to a mix of Game of Thrones and The Hunger Games (although no fantasy book can top the ASOIAF series in my opinion).

Upon her 19th birthday, Kelsea Raleigh is set to be crowned Queen of Tearling, a kingdom she hasn't stepped foot in since she was a baby. The former queen, her mother, died years ago and ever since, Tearling has been under the reign of her incompetent and lazy uncle (the same uncle who happens to have an order out to assassinate her before she ever has the chance to take the throne). When Kelsea returns to Tearling, she realizes her mother has left a broken and corrupt society, where the lives of its citizens are sacrificed for "peace" with a neighbouring region.

I found myself reeled in by page 50, and I would have finished this book much sooner if not for my need to study for an upcoming exam. The only thing that irked me about this book was Kelsea's declaration of love for a certain character very early into the story (don't want to spoil anything so I shall say no more).

All in all, if you enjoy fantasy books, read this! Ah, what a good story.
