Genuinely loved this book. A super cute devotion to fandoms everywhere. Honestly I didn't realize how much of a geek I was until I read this book. Not that that's a bad thing. The only reason I'm giving this book four stars instead of five is because the first one hundred and something pages were pretty repetitive and it was kind of hard to get through. But if you're having trouble reading it, just keep pushing through because the ending is so worth it. Super cute read that perfectly wraps up my last book. One of the better contemporary novels I've read.

(Also, the reason it took me so long to read this has nothing to do with the book itself.)

Having finished the book at 2:30 a.m. today, I'm still relishing (it's noon) the "feels" that it evoked. Needless to say, I thoroughly enjoyed this book as a whole. It had me (literally) laughing out loud, eagerly turning pages in the hopes that the latest twist would work itself out, and squealing with delight at the phrases, references, and nods to all things "geek".

The characters and fandom culture are the most appealing factors for me. Elle and Darian's loyalty to and respect for cannon, their humility in identifying as true fans, and the reasons for which they love Starfield (the characters, the values & lessons learned), are all qualities that resonate with me. I also especially love and appreciate the descriptive, family-like atmosphere of ExcelsiCon (thinking of how other cosplayers came together for Elle) -- I could clearly envision the crowds, the mingling of cosplayers. It was beautiful.

I think the author's working of Cal as her own person, and not just a cookie-cutter stepsister, to be refreshing; it makes the Cinderella story more realistic. The other secondary characters are, for the most part, well-developed and provide a good supporting cast. I especially think Sage is awesome, and her relationship with Elle to be realistic.

One of my fave Cinderella adaptations yet, and a fantastic appreciation of fan culture. Some moments of fan unity during the con really, really had me fighting tears. And the romance was pretty great too - maybe a little too easy; did they know each other as well as I might have hoped? Probably not, but it didn't really feel like the point in this book, and I (strangely) liked that even more. I look forward to more cool releases like this from a local author - until next time!

“Look to the stars. Aim. Ignite.”
― Ashley Poston, Geekerella

Geekerella is a modern retelling on Cinderella, which I thought was cool. I thought this story was pretty cute and quite funny in a weird way. It was a very light read and I enjoyed it a lot. I think the fact that I could relate to it in a way played a factor as to why I liked and connected to it. I would actually love to read other books that are similar to this.

This was a cute story. I loved the dual perspectives of the characters. Darien was fun-loving and felt like a teenage boy, which I appreciated. El was such a sweet character as well, and you could tell how her relationship with her stepmother and stepsisters wore her down mentally. I felt terrible for her so many times, but I'm honestly so glad they didn't give either of them redemption stories. Cal was the only one that a redemption made sense for and it was necessary to move the story along as well. Sage was hands down the best character though; she truly was El's fairy godmother.

While I enjoyed the texting between Darien and El, once they met in person their relationship became kind of cringey. The things they were saying in text format that were cute didn't translate well when they were speaking in person. On the other hand, their connection through Starfield was cute! I loved the nerd, fandom perspective the book took because I have definitely obsessed over books and TV shows. I'm not sure I would make it the center of every conversation I have with someone though. But also, their obsession with Starfield is part of the entire plot of the story, so of course they would bring it up a lot. That's pretty much the reason I think this book is a solid 3.

The only other thing about the story I'll bring up is the fact the ending felt kind of all over the place. There was so much going on, especially between Darien finding out the 'mystery girl' was the blogger, who at first he hated then kinda liked, only to find out she was El the whole time, while El had literally no idea Darien was Car, just that he was the actor. It felt like the entire novel was so slow, and then suddenly the pace picked up so much and it was hard to keep up.

There were some post production errors I noticed in the audio version. Sometimes the narrators repeated the same lines twice and I can only assume they were multiple takes that were failed to be edited out. It did take away from the story a bit but I actually got used to it eventually.

This is one of those books that I see being carried around quite a bit at school, so for that reason I wanted to read it. Also, it looked like fun. While it's not my cup of tea (although I really did love Sage), I can see how it could be for many students.

4.5 stars! I normally don't pick up contemporaries, but after reading the synopsis I had to give this one a go! I'm so glad I did. This book is exactly what you'd expect it to be! It's cute, funny, and diverse!

The only "issue" I had was the pacing in the book, but it wasn't so bad that it still wasn't enjoyable.

More like 2.75 stars. While it seemed like a patchwork of several other Cinderella adaptations and the dialogue was sometimes painfully cliche and melodramatic (in a bad way - I love some well-written melodrama), nevertheless it was a fun, cute read.
