I have a lot of conflicting opinions about this book. Overall, I finished it. It was a solid read. The book centers on Katrina and Nathan, once co-writers. Now, Katrina is retired and Nathan is chasing success as a solo author, but finding that his writing doesn't quite measure up to his prior works with Katrina. Their contract technically includes one more book together, which they agree to write for various reasons. This is the story of that writing process, including the history leading up to this point and them finally letting themselves explore their true emotions.

I appreciated this for what it was. The writing was good, and my favorite part of this story is how real the characters felt. I found myself relating to Katrina several times - I too can be petty and afraid to face my emotions.

Now for what I didn't love: this was the epitome of a slow burn, and the ending didn't feel solid enough to make up for the 200 or so pages leading up to it. Also, Nathan and Katrina loved each other four years ago - we get that.
However, Nathan, and on some level, Katrina, thinks he is a decent person because he refused to cheat on his wife. I might add that cheating is not solely about the physical - Nathan was deep in the throes of emotional cheating by the time he asked Melissa for a divorce.

Okay. Well, it feels like I have a lot, but also hardly anything, to say about this book. I don't feel like I can properly judge how good of a romance book it is, especially since it made me realise I might not really like romance novels (when the main plot of the story revolves around the romance, that is).

I think it was clever, how, between the book the main characters were writing and their own story, there were many juxtapositions. I do wish those juxtapositions had not been portrayed as intentional so much, though. This book was a lot about inner feelings finding themselves in one's writing, and this was pointed out nearly just as many times as it appeared in the novel. I did, however, overall enjoy reading from the perspectives of two people who love to write and love to read.

Certain elements of this story were also more inspirational than I'd usually like (ex: finding your own happiness, learning to face your fears, etc.).

Anyway, take from this what you will. This review is highly subjective, so I don't know lol

Thank you to Net Galley for this ARC! I was so excited to read The Roughest Draft by Emily Wibberley and Austin Siegemund-Broka because it was one of my most anticipated reads for 2022! This book was one of my first co-written reads, and I LOVE a good dual POV so I couldn't wait to read it!

The story follows main characters, Katrina Freeling and Nathan Van Huysen, as they attempt to co-write another book together while sharing a house in Florida after a major falling out years prior. I really enjoyed how deeply the story focused on Katrina and Nathan's writing processes and how it is part of who they are while examining where the line between fiction and truth becomes blurry.

To be honest, the plot in the first half was a little slow for my personal taste, but the second half of the book was what I really loved. I still would highly recommend The Roughest Draft!
