Really 2.5 stars
Red herrings galore! Everyone is a red herring, just for fun. The ending with her mom appearing and Olivia realizing her mom had been either living in or sneaking in to the attic and spying on her? And apparently drugging her screw top wine, which in turn caused Olivia to sleepwalk?! What?
If the book had ended at the second to last chapter, with suspicion on Nathan Coleman and some loose ends, it would have been better.
Arden Olivia Maynor was the miracle girl from Widow Hills. She’d been swept away in a flood while sleepwalking when she was 6 years old. Flash forward 20 years and she’s now Olivia Mayer. She changed her name ten years ago because the notoriety and media surrounding her case is still a thing, even though it’d been a decade. A bit unbelievable or unlikely to me that people would go to all the trouble to harass her 10 and 20 years later — even if some people had suspicions that it was staged, its hard to believe THAT many people would harass a person who was six when it happened. And Nathan Coleman being si mad that he’s spent the last 20 years obsessing over it because HIS family didn’t get the spotlight and money from the story? I don’t really get that. Maybe the author should have had a settlement or inheritance or something written in, because it doesn’t seem like Nathan would have that much of a reason to have a grudge against Olivia — especially not enough to stalk her like he does. I mean yes, get mad at your dad for not cashing in on some media opportunities, or yes, try to convince Olivia to tell the new/true version of the old ‘6 y.o. survives 3 days in a storm pipe story’, but to the extremes he did? I don’t buy it.
EVERYone is a red herring. Dr. Cal, whom she goes to about her inability to sleep, is unnecessarily smarmy and really a non-character. Bennett is questionably aloof and maybe too interested in her, or maybe he’s gay? I dunno. Poor neighbor Rick, with his ominous warnings about changing the locks because his son’s friends were “bad people. Like...really bad” but nothing ever came of that dropped detail. And he, himself, is not to be trusted but kidding! She can trust him because he’s another red herring. Even sweet and fun Elyse acts suspiciously and then goes and ODs unexpectedly, with her own pointless side storyline about stealing drugs from the hospital. And then I guess Elyse’s neighbor and friend at work, Erin, is really Olivia’s mom?! What?!
Spoiler: Olivia’s mom broke Olivia’s arm (accident? Purposefully?) when she was six. In order to cover it up, she makes up a story about her sleepwalking daughter being swept away in a flash flood. Everyone looks for her and it’s national news. Really, Olivia (then Arden) is drugged in their basement. Until one day Mr. Coleman finds her in a drain pipe and yay! Everyone is happy. But then people are weirdly mean and threatening about the money (?!) they got and ten years later Arden slams a girl against a locker because the girl was saying horrible things about her drainage ditch past. (?!) Arden hates enclosed spaces and freaks out and gets violent when she feels trapped.
20 years after the flood rescue, Arden/Olivia is living far away with a new start. She starts sleepwalking again (reaction to the meds her mom is sneaking in her wine) and one night wakes up outside after tripping on dead Mr. Coleman. Who I’m not even sure who killed him now because it made sense that his son, Nathan, would do it to keep him quiet but I think her returned from the dead coworker mother did it.
