This is exactly the kind of book written for me by Silvia Moreno Garcia! I adore her writing, so ok now I’m a tad biased, but when you add in magic and vinyl records? I’m sold. I can see what some say about Meche, but for me I don’t have to love the main character to enjoy a book. Her development was rough at times, but it was exactly her personality throughout the book. I found her most endearing when reflecting on the difficulties of life an family, and the magic of  records.
My heart broke a little with grandma, and while I didn’t love either mom or dad, the characters were written in a way that you could see how they become and lived as they did. < /spoiler>  I highly recommend the playlist along with this book too!

ARC provided by NetGalley.

I find it hard to put into words how I feel about this book, or how to rate it, but for the most part it was interesting and I enjoyed the premise and the characters, as well as the multiple pov's and the dual timeline narrative.

Meche is an interesting main character, one I can see did not translate well to many other reviewers. Personally, I loved her in all her selfish, contrarian glory. Angry girls are oft told they're hysterical, patronised and invalidated, but teenage girls tend to get a rubbish run of the peak puberty years and I loved watching her descend into her magic and give into her anger.

I also really enjoyed the exploration of her relationship with her father in the 2009 timeline as she navigated her complicated feelings towards him in the aftermath of his death, after 20 years of estrangement.

Sebastian was the roughest part of the book for me, I personally didn't like his and Meche's dynamic romantically, and towards the end of the 1989 timeline I lost patience for their games of deliberately hurting each other in cycles of teenage jealousy.

Overall, I did enjoy the book a lot, and would recommend it for anyone who wants a low magic setting, explorations of grief and tough love. I very much liked the author's style and lot of her other books sound amazing, so I'll definitely be picking them up in future.

Signal to Noise weaves together a love of music and the magic and misadventures of being young, dumb, and in love.

“Guys, I just want to remind you I have to be home by seven,” Daniela said. “I’m also not allowed to do any Satanic stuff.”

At times hilarious, this book reminded me of a goofy and more caring The Craft, as three friends form a magic circle and let lose some magic without realising the consequences.

But that's where the comparison ends. Signal to Noise confronts past hurts and broken families, the reconstruction of damaged relationships and finding peace with the past.

Moreno-Garcia again writes a fantastic unlikeable and prickly main character who you can't help but love.

Signal to Noise is another fantastic book from this author and I'm so glad that it's getting an updated version and a second chance.

Come for the music magic, stay for the healing of past hurts.

Thank you Rebellion, Solaria and NetGalley for the arc. All opinions are my own.
