Reviews with content warning for Misogyny - Men Who Hate Women

The first two-thirds of the book is describing the manosphere and its consequences. Very dry and explicit but a great explanation for those less familiar. If you're well versed on this topic already, I would skip to the last third of the book which focuses more on how these ideologies have been adopted and weaponized by politicians and pseudoscientists as well as how young boys are radicalized.

I’m not sold on the idea that labelling incels as terrorists and increasing police efforts to address them is an effective solution. As noted by Bates, so many of those in positions of power and police officers espouse these ideologies or are misogynistic. Counterterrorism has largely been ineffective in squashing terrorism, let alone the ideologies that underpin it.

The analysis and recommendations are honestly quite tame. Deplatforming and regulating social media algorithms seem to be the two convincing recommendations put forward. Not convinced that terrorism framework is useful in this (or most) contexts.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It is definitely one that had to be read in small chunks. This book was extremely informed and real but definitely hard to stomach at times. If you have any desire to grow in your understanding of extreme misogyny and its foundations, this is the book to read.

As somebody who works with college aged men, this book was super informative to some casual comments and underlying sentiments I encounter. If you work with young and men in any capacity, I highly recommend this book.
