The Princess Diaries with absolutely none of the charm. I am happy to suspend disbelief for any ridiculous situation, but the complete lack of emotional realism ruined this for me.
The MC finds out his bio dad is alive and his mom has been lying to him for his entire life, spends about 2 days being slightly sad and then completely forgives them!?!?!?!

This book was just boring and the characters were so cardboard. I realized 50% of my way into the audiobook that I had not enjoyed a single moment. Nothing was a challenge for the MC, there were no stakes. I did not care.

Cale wins again. I swear, I'm never going to read a book from this author that doesn't hook me from the start, regardless of the genre. Erik and Jamie had such a fun story, and it was rags to riches taken so lightly that it made it that much more enjoyable. Yes to all of it.

It's cute. Fluffy. Doesn't require much thinking. Jamie and Erik are cute but somewhat bland main characters, and their relationship feels very Hallmark Movie. It's not bad but it doesn't really break any barriers and feels very tropey at times.

The whole third act breakup and Erik’s family forcing him to date another boy because handwavy nonsense about a stable relationship for the public. Like??? He's like 17? It's very much a contrived tropey plot device to fit in this weird third act breakup. It just feels unrealistic and kind of like a Kdrama plot at times. It's not bad, but it's just kind of Hallmark or K-drama coded at times with weird plot choices.

Young Adult
Princess Diaries vibes

Rating: ??? - for me this was a 2, just way too young for me, I got bored and wanted to move on, for an early teen two thumbs up, super cute and age appropriate romance

TLDR: Are you a young teen? This book is for you.

This book is cute. Enjoyable Princess Diaries vibes without just being a queer retelling of that story. This book is clearly written for a young audience. I wouldn't recommend it for anyone older than young teens. The main characters are 17 and behave in very safe ways. I would let my kids read this.

The audiobook performances were good. One narrator gave the character an annoyingly ridged voice. This was intentional for the character but it still grated at first.

Ultimately, I'd recommend this book to anyone who is a young teenager.
