I hate poetries that don't rhyme.. :-/
Joking.. that's not my issue with this "book". Is this even a book?

I was looking forward to reading this after watching a TEDxTalk by Rupi Kaur. This is a very cleverly written/presented thing. It starts with a sensitive subject so as to get the reader emotionally invested. And then.. it's total nonsense. I'll share a few excerpts. Read on..

"you’ve touched me
without even
touching me"

(The rest of the page- blank)

"you look like you smell of
honey and no pain
let me have a taste of that"

(The rest of the page- blank)

"my name sounds so good
french kissing your tongue"

(The rest of the page- blank)

"soft
is
to be
powerful"

(The rest of the page- blank)

"i am undoing you
from my skin"

(The rest of the page- blank)

"more than anything
i want to save you
from myself"

(The rest of the page- blank)

"i am ready for you
i have always
been
ready for you
- the first time"

(The rest of the page- blank)

Most of it went like this. And it's about 204 pages. Yes.
And even when the "poet"(ahem) managed to fill the page, this is what you got to read:

"we’ve been arguing more than we ought to. about things neither of us remember or care about cause that’s how we avoid the bigger questions. instead of asking why we don’t say i love you to one another as often as we used to. we fight about things like: who was supposed to get up and turn the lights off first. or who was supposed to pop the frozen pizza in the oven after work. taking hits at the most vulnerable parts of one another. we’re like fingers on thorns honey. we know exactly where it hurts.
and everything is on the table tonight. like that one time you whispered a name i’m pretty sure wasn’t mine in your sleep. or last week when you said you were working late. so i called work but they said you’d already left a couple hours ago. where were you for those couple hours."

Honestly.. Is this poetry? If yes, I'm just not able to appreciate it.

I'm giving it two stars because a couple of poems were good. Like these:

"to mention my period in public
cause the actual biology
of my body is too real

it is okay to sell what’s
between a woman’s legs
more than it is okay to
mention its inner workings

the recreational use of
this body is seen as
beautiful while
its nature is
seen as ugly"

"you are in the habit
of co-depending
on people to
make up for what
you think you lack

who tricked you
into believing
another person
was meant to complete you
when the most they can do is complement"

I won't go out of my way to recommend this.

I'm not a poetry fan but this book spoke to every part of me. This should a must on every bookcase, in every household - so human and unapologetic.

This is the type of book that explains emotions so well. I found myself nodding to most of this words in this book. I love how it moved from pain to healing. It was weaving a tale that although there is pain, we should be patient enough to wait for the healing process. There is a balance in this world. no matter how everything may seem unfair to you. There is always balance. It gave me strength and empowered me. And for that, this book deserves more than a 5 star.
