I love these books for being so unintentionally hilarious like this isn’t supposed to be funny so why am I laughing so much

I've read this a few times, but nowhere near as many as the short stories or Hound of the Baskervilles. It's a great story, and there are a lot of really exciting bits, especially the chase down the river, but there's also a lot of racism. I'd recommend the stories and HOTB before this, although I think it works much better than A Study in Scarlet which goes off into a totally different story for half the book!

Really proud of ACD for not including a long interlude about evil Mormons this time!

I've heard people say that this is their favorite SH novel, and for good reason. My only familiarity with this story is the BBC show, and their version of this mystery has a slightly less ridiculous resolution. However, I'm not really reading these for the mysteries. They're just fun character novels.

i liked the story mire than the one of a study in scarlet, and i feel that i can appreciate the characterisation and banter of holmes and watson more than i could when i first read holmes stories at about fourteen. but the racism and colonial attitude was quite unbearable.
