would've appreciated this more if it were a standard self-help or psychology book and the author didn't try to be funny. if there's something that won't take a smile out of me is comedians. the chances are less than zero if they're speaking in english. haha my job is to make you laugh. well, you don't. my own misery is way funnier.

I picked up this book because I’ve been following Dan Howell’s YouTube career for the past 12 years, but You Will Get Through This Night isn’t just one of those sell-out youtuber books. It’s an actual, legitimate mental heath guide, that has been meticulously researched and informed by a psychological consultant. It’s full of information, personal anecdotes, thought-experiments and excercises to aid all kinds of aspects of your mental health.
I’ve been in and out of therapy for a while, have a lot of experience meditating, and actually have been praciticing self compassion quite a bit - so this book didn’t teach me a lot of new things. However, it served as a useful reminder, and I can see this being useful for loads of other people who haven’t played through all levels of the Mental Health-game yet. As a matter of fact, I will lend this book to my boyfriend later.
Do make sure, if you read this book, that the advice in it isn’t harmful for you if you have a specific kind of disorder or neurodivergence; I, for one, am autistic, and I know for a fact that some of the burnout-advice in this book might be counterproductive if you have autism. Pushing yourself to do things when in autistic burnout is only going to harm you further - so be careful.
That being said, I think the tone of this book was very considerate of the fact that not all minds work the same, and that some of us might need some help from a professional in implementing these changes in our lives. Moreover, Dan is incredibly funny, and his personal anecdotes and jokes in the midst of all this made for a very enjoyable reading experience. It felt like I was getting advice from a friend, rather than someone who considered themselves superior over me. It was lovely.

I’m not the type of person to read self help books, but I gave this a try because I’ve been a fan of Dan’s content for a long time. I would seriously recommend this to anyone struggling with their mental health! While I read this from cover to cover chronologically, you don’t have to. There are sections that help with immediate situations to long term techniques, and you can just pick a section for whatever you need help with in the moment. There were so many things in here that I resonated with (I felt like I was being watched?? In a good way?? Like how did you know that I do that or think that?), so I can say this book helped me to feel not alone, and I came out of it with an improved outlook on my mental health!

I have to implicate myself as not entirely subjective here– I probably wouldn’t have picked this book up if it had been by anyone else, but Howell’s skits have been a fixture in my life for a while, and nostalgia stirred my curiosity. Obviously, I enjoy his sense of humour, which is certainly present in YWGTTN. I do, however, think that this is a really good self-help guide, especially for young adults and teenagers, thanks to its accesible language. As someone with a psychology degree, the explanatory sections were definitely below my pay-grade, and if you’re looking for an academic text, you’re in the wrong place. But this book is genuinely practical, thoughtfully divided into sections that will help someone in a current crisis, or trying to maintain their mental health over time. The exercises in it are simple, approachable, and there are a nice selection of them, since not everything is going to work for everyone, but not an overwhelming slew. I found myself wishing I’d received something more along these lines than the same tired CBT-techniques that didn’t suit me from the adults in my life as a teenager, and think it could be a really valuable resource for a lot of people.

The self-help style mixed with Howell's hilarious personal interjections make this a very fun read. Mental health is a topic that can be hard to approach, so I appreciate his willingness to take it head on and open up about his own struggles.
