It's incredibly hard to rate a book like this one where it's mostly an individual thing. I think that many people will identify with the things that Dan writes about his own mental health journey in this one and I think that it will genuinely help many people. There were numerous points that I encountered while reading this book that I appreciated the reminders. Mental health is not a singular uphill battle and this book could benefit anyone at any point of the mental health journey.
dnf at 130 pages. giving this a low rating hurts because i don't think i would have survived my early teens without dan's videos >_< i went into this with the determination to give it five stars just because it's him but, ugh, this is so disappointing.
everything in this book is common tumblr advice about mental health that dan's primary audience and i have already heard a thousand times. the conversation around mental health (especially within dan's fan demographic) has long since surpassed the need for books like this. i didn't expect him to go into depth about how capitalism or systems of oppression affect our mental health but that is what the current discourse requires, so i wish he had gone in a different direction. he could have written a memoir where he discusses how the things he spoke about in this book personally helped HIS growth, because it's been beautiful seeing him flourish, and i would have eaten it up, but instead i read a book that is largely impersonal and has too wide of a scope to be impactful :/

Honestly yeah this was lovely!! There were some bits especially about self-compassion that I found compelling. And if some of the humour in this book wasn't a home run with me (at least me as I am in 2022) I can see how it could act as a bridge to younger readers much more likely to pick up a book with a familiar face and skip-around structure than a scientist's dissertation.

As a mental health professional, I would recommend this book to my client - Dan Howell uses his experiences to craft a practical, digestible guide to mental wellbeing, breaking skills down into doable chunks, accessible to people even in crisis. I am thoroughly impressed with his honesty and the candid nature of his writing, so clearly understanding the depth of his responsibility as an influencer and taking this incredibly seriously. Dan Howell wanted to help people, and he will.
