3.5 stars. Therapy on a budget!
I'm pretty sure that my 2018 was exclusively watching Dan and Phil videos on YouTube and I've followed Dan Howell's journey ever since, from speaking openly about his depression to coming out. When I saw this mental health guide book was coming out from Dan, it was an instant pre-order.
For the most part, I thought it was really well put together and there were tons of really great tips shared. The first section ('this night') and the last section ('the days after that') were definitely the strongest, with some tips that can really help someone in the midst of a crisis or someone who's generally struggling with stress / feelings of inadequacy.
The middle section though, 'tomorrow', which was the largest chunk of the book, I completely skimmed. I don't think it's a secret or necessary to remind people that getting enough sleep, eating properly, and exercising are important for maintaining your mental health. I didn't find it added much to the conversation.
The beginning and the end of this book, though, are worth a read for sure. I'm going to try to incorporate some of the tips shared into the emotional intelligence course I teach.
Really glad that Dan is using his platform to help others improve their mental health and I think this book will do just that!

Dan is a beautiful writer and I loved reading about how he experienced things. It’s different watching his YouTube videos with his self deprecating humor versus reading his experience from his point of view. I loved how through this book there were exercises that explained in detail how they’re helpful. Such a well written book.

Thoroughly enjoyed listening to this. A really thoughtful balance of personal stories and experiences blended with practical helpful tips for recognising signs of depression and poor mental health.
My teenaged self would have loved to read this, both as a fan and as someone who would have benefitted from the tips.

I really liked this! I read it because I grew up loving Dan and Phil, and have been experiencing my own mental health journey for a while. I basically refuse to rate non-fiction, but please note that I recommend this to people who feel stuck in their journey. You do NOT need to like Dan's content to enjoy this and get value out of it. You will get through this night!!!
