This was a really enjoyable read, and some really beautifully rendered imagery, especially when describing memories of Mexico. This is not a book that cares very much about plot - it's all about getting into the characters' heads at a specific slice of time. I thought towards the end, when the plot does actually take a turn, it was somewhat jarring and unnecessary, but it's a rather minor complaint.
4+. It was a little hard to keep everyone straight, but overall charming and touching.

This book is heartbreaking and hilarious and so well told. Perfectly captures a big insane family, and the relationship between the Angels was gorgeous. There’s a good amount of sexism here and that’s extremely frustrating, but I felt like it wasn’t the author but the characters. Anyway…I still loved it.

Read Harder Challenge #7: An #ownvoices book set in Mexico or Central America
Full disclosure: this book is mostly set in the US, but parts of it take place in Mexico and it's listed on the Book Riot suggestions, so it definitely counts.
It's very good. A lot of characters, as you might expect, but they're distinct and very well-developed, which helps make it less confusing. I discovered too late that there's a family tree at the end, which would have been helpful. The ending is amazing.

I don’t often listen to audiobooks, but I’m so glad I listened to this one on a long road trip. The book is hilarious, poignant, heartbreaking, and beautiful. The author’s narration is riveting, and he thoroughly inhabits each character in this sprawling, crazy family to bring them to life. Highly recommended.

I loved this book!!! Several times while reading it I felt like I was watching a movie or immersed in the scene. I have rarely felt a book come to life so vividly! Can’t wait to read more of Urrea’s work.
